Tesco 'totally irresponsible' for slashing price of chocolate bars to 20p, say health

*old man voice* In my day, chocolate bars only cost 10p ... and there were fewer fatties about.
If I had one of these pointless "health expert" jobs, I might see that obesity has risen along with the price of chocolate and claim, with no evidence whatsoever, that it's obvious that higher prices make chocolate seem more luxurious and this leads to more obesity. So call for a ban of price increases and cheaper chocolate to save our tubby kids. But, unlike most of these quacks, I'm not in the business of peddling nanny state nonsense. This is everybody's fault but mine.0 -

In real terms the price of chocolate will have got cheaper.
though not sure when your day was when your bars were 10p0 -

Well put it this way, I remember about 20 years ago when mars bars and marathons (now known as snickers) were 10p
I cant think of anything else that might have increased so much in price except maybe petrol (i know its doubled in price over the course of 7 years). You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -

Are you sure they were as cheap as 10p from your general newsagent? I thought they were at least 20p. though I was a good boy and spent my dinner money on non-confectionary
Reading on here today. gravy gone from 20p to 46p!
Seems to be a whole host of products going up all the time.
Ok chocolates - well cocoa prices have gone up a fair bit for a few reasons.
You can still get your value 100g bars for under 30p.0 -

I didnt get sweets often as a child as I wasnt one of those kids who constantly wants sweets - even now as an adult I rarely eat sweeties. So the price is pretty easy for me to remember
Used to get your 50p pocket money and it would last for ages
I seem to recall them being bigger too! Although not sure if thats just because I was smaller :rotfl: I know penny chews (like cola bottles) used to be more than twice the size they are now.
And yes that was a general newsagents, not a supermarket. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
well in the day before price comparrison web site etc they did not have to worry about competitors as much.
I guess you had a nice cheap newsagent compared to mine.
robbing me out of my dinner money. If only there was this resource back then.lol 0 -

They are flogging some Lindt chocolate (with hazelnuts) for 50p. That's far more irresponsible because I bought four.
Five Twix bars for a quid is hardly the bargain of the century.0 -

I remember the 10d days! Now that does merit an "old man voice".0 -

Eh might be due to difference in geography. I know somethings can be dearer depending on where you live
At present I think a mars would cost between 40-50p depending where you got it. Petrols £1.30 a litre. Milks 90p for 2l. Pack of gum is 45p :O (I remember when that was dirt cheap too).
Those are the only things I can really think of without quoting supermarket prices! You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0
