    Its tax deductible, dont worry.

We dont have £3K and we certainly couldnt justify it - we would have to put that cost on to somewhere and customers wont pay us more!
  • Yes, with a 21 yr old driver that van could be a death trap for other motorists. Van drivers 'in my experience' are bad drivers, and a 21 yr old male added into the mix, if I was an insurance company I would charge more than that for him. Its not so much the value of the van (you worry about that only) its the value of personal injury claims he may cost the insurance company, that's where the real 'risk' comes into play. At 21 their driving experience is minimal, a male is more likely to take risks when driving, gung-ho attitudes etc (when cars, vans, lorries are lethal in the wrong hands) could cost that insurance company many many thousands or even millions, depending on who he damages (if he does) who he kills (if he does) and actually how many people he does this to if he is at fault and there is more than one person in the other vehicle or vehicles. Personally I would have employed someone older and cheaper to insure in your situation, also I would feel more secure that my van would stay in one piece!

    That told you!

Although the 21 year-old in question might have 4 years experience, a clean licence and no accidents.

    No stereotyping there then.

Seems to me insurance companies stereotype! and with good reason. Statistics speak for themselves. I rest my case.

4 yrs experience and a clean license is no guarantee. Most road deaths are caused by this age group and predominantly males. They all had a clean license and experience prior to their first accident, a lot of those accidents causing death or serious injury.

And from your username, you drive a 4x4, and the furthest offroad it ever goes is when you park around the corner on the school car park.

    But without stereotyping

"4 yrs experience and a clean license is no guarantee"

I'd take it over a middle aged driver that hadn't taken a test in 30 years, and probably wouldn't come close to passing.

"They all had a clean license and experience prior to their first accident"

And I think you're mixing up 17 year old statistics, with elder age groups.
Most 17 year olds don't have a great deal of experience, as they have just passed their test.

I don't have children, so last place you would find me is near a school or even driving past one :pprefer cats lol

Don't have a 4x4 actually and rarely see the city, I prefer to climb mountains. You're right, stereotyping is risky :D

The figures for 17 to 24 say they have about twice as many accidents as older drivers.
They appear to show a steady decrease in accidents by younger drivers, and exactly the same ratio as older drivers year on year.

If this is true, why are insurers now saying they have so many more accidents, insurance has to be ten times what an older driver pays, and not merly twice the amount, and have they managed to create an urban myth that others are happy to repeat without seeing any real proof.

It may be a worrying trend that "younger drivers" now go up to age 24, so they will be hammered as well soon.

This question assumes that insurers are saying that.

As you are renowned for throroughly researching insurance topics prior to posting, can you please post a link where a UK motor insurer has stated that the absolute number of accidents per year involving young drivers has been increasing in recent years?

    No proof at all.

As you also seem to imply there is no proof, it does seem to be an urban myth has been delevoped.
As they don't appear to be having more accidents then they ever did, perhaps we'll see fairer premiums on the way.
