My Rights as a Tenant

  • Unless I have completely misunderstood and am therefore utterly in the wrong, I believe that the situation as first presented has little to do with the actual one. Once I became aware of what I saw as the OP's economy with the truth I lost quite a bit of sympathy for them.

I am really confused, if the OP is genuine and not posting about a friend again, I don't understand why they are being made to feel as if they are in the wrong and should have just quietly left.......

I Agree, the OP has rights. The contract has been broken by the landlord from day 1.very LL friendly on here

My original point , as I SEE IT

not always, stick around a bit longer and I think you will see that. I got a lot of support with my terrible landlord, and he was a right !!!!!!! EVEN the lettings agent said there was something not right with him !!

I think you may be taken more seriously if you read for a while and post a bit less until you have been here a bit longer.

I also agree that the OP has rights but not paying the rent, whatever the landlord's transgressions, are not one of them, alas.

    Very LL friendly on here

Oh, the irony! If irony it is. Only a very few days ago I was accused of being vehemently anti-landlord. By one of the resident landlords on this very forum. I'd like to know which I really am: LL-friendly or anti-landlord. I am confused.

See, what I think really goes on is that people give their opinions, their advice based on the facts as presented according to the facts they have at their disposal. Supplyng facts does not mean one is pro or anti anything. Facts are indifferent little things.

I cannot see how anyone has the right to give me 10-15minutes to move out, I am sure first the council would need a court order etc, then the landlord would be responsible to provide an alternative property, failing that then the landlord will have to put all 4 studios.in a hotel, all of which have 2 people in each studio. I am not in the least worried, its the landlords problem, you cannot just be put on to the road for no fault ofbyour own, same if you did not pay the rent, landlord has processes which he must go through the courts.

I think you might be right. Something similar happened in the property I'm renting right now (studio in a house). The council investigated the property after one of the tenants asked them a similarly innocuous question, and it was found that the property will need a fair bit of work done to it to bring it up to regulation standards. HOWEVER, because we are contracted in for a good few months yet, and the work is extensive, the council have ordered that the work be carried out after our contract has ended and before new tenants can be moved in.

Fingers crossed this will be the same for you. I don't think it's particularly kind that other posters seem to be trying to scare you by saying that the landlord may hold some grim vendetta against you personally - the council aren't going to put you in danger by telling the LL that it was you they first spoke to, they have no obligation at all to divulge such info so it could have been any of the tenants currently living there!

Good luck in any case, & try & contact Shelter early in order to find out what your rights and the councils / LLs responsibilities may be, should you need to be rehoused. x

Again my point is this, the landlord has committed council tax evasion, and broken two planning rules and who knows what else, and its being said I will get 10minutes.notice to move out, what a lot of rubbish, ie there is laws surely that is why we have a contract. If I do get 10 mins notice fine, lets hope the landlord has a big bank account as I will be moving directly into a hotel at his expence, the Ritz is only around the corner, that will do nicely LL!

Oh and the LL is another foreigner that thinks he can do as he pleases, maybe in his own country but not he. No doubt he would have extended the house into a tower block given a chance. Lets hope after all the council, the mortgage lender does the same, along with the tax man. Power to the people
  • Your having dragged in that he is a "foreigner" as if that had any relevance at all paints you as just the sort of person I came to realise you were earlier on this thread. I don't think you actually deserve any more help on here any longer. If foreigners are that repugnant to you perhaps you should have found yourself a different, more acceptable landlord.
