I bought a car 2 months ago and was undercharged by £750, this was an mistake made by the car company, l was happy to pay the full amount. I was called last night and asked to pay the difference. I have 2 signed copies of receipts saying l have paid in full and have the V5 certificate. This was their mistake. I know where l stand morally, but what about legally? Any advice welcome.

Once the contract's complete, then it's tough titties to them. I'd say you're legally in the clear."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

Undercharged compared to what? the screen price?
Do you have any paperwork (signed or otherwise) with the higher price on?
If not I would suggest you are in the clear. Both morally and otherwise.Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
Just tell them that was the price you negotiatedOne important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.0

When you say undercharged does the paperwork say you paid the lower amount or does the paperwork say you paid the higher amount? I think if it says you paid the higher amount and you in fact didn't then you may have a problem. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Agreed, with one caveat: that they don't have proof that a lower amount was actually paid. Although that might involve some lying on behalf of the OP if ever challenged...
TBH, to give absolutely cast iron advice/absolution, we need a few more details."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
As you knew you'd underpaid, and they have discovered you did, then it seems to me the paperwork probably didn't match. If that's true and they have proof you agreed to a higher price, they're entitled to the extra. If the paperwork 'mistakenly' shows £x, and you paid £x, then they wouldn't appear to have much of a leg to stand on.0

Do you have an invoice or any other paperwork other than the receipts for the payment made to them?0

Thanks for all the replies folks. I agreed to pay £2750. The dealer said that as we were paying by credit card then he would put it through as two separate transactions to avoid paying some fee. This was entirely his idea, we were not trying to get away with anything.
We were buying the car with a very unhappy toddler and to be honest l left it all for my husband to deal with, he said he just typed in his pin when asked and couldn't remember if he had done it once or twice. Anyway a week later we received two receipts stating that we had paid in full and got our v5 doc. We thought everything was fine until he called stating that we had not paid the full amount. We bought this car two months ago and a finance agreement was never discussed.
Thanks again folks0 -
Oh just to say....the receipts do state that we paid the full £27500

So did yoou get an invoice stating the price of £2750 and what did the amount of the receipts add up to? (edit: just missed your post above) Sounds to me that whilst there was an error taking payment you did agree to pay the full amount of £2750 of which clearly you haven't. I would say you still owe them £750.0
