Bought a dog - no paperwork - previous owners want to visit...

I know that you use one vet - but it might be worth phoning around to get other quotes.
We did that after being quoted £200 for an X-ray but ended up going to a vet with an excellent reputation who didn't need the X-ray & treated Clootie for about £30.
The first vet was a town vet who expects everyone to pay via insurance - the one we use is a country vet. Country vet told us how to remove a tick & keep an eye out to make sure wound was not infected many moons ago - town vet advised to bring dog down so they could remove tick & give anti-biotics
I would NEVER risk any of my dogs health but I love the fact that vet is an old school vet - only issue is - he's more likely to growl at me than the dogs are.

Maybe I just don't trust people, but what flashed through my mind was that if this little one is valuable for stud duties, are they wanting to come over to try and snatch him back ... ?
I don't think I'd be leaving him outside in the garden for any length of time over half-term if I were you.
If they kick up a stink about it, tell them you would prefer they didn't come because as he is now settled with you, you don't want to unsettle him and make him think he isn't staying. Just bluff it!
If they don't take that, then tell them you have had to have medical treatment for conditions you've been told would have been present from a very early age and hadn't been treated, so if they continue to pester you, you would seek to report such wilful neglect ... that might stop them in their tracks.
Gggrrrrr, horrible people ... and for some to say they'd have him when his ears were treated ... well, it just shows what they want him for ... bl88dy stud fees ... they're not bothered how lovely a pet he is and that he deserves a loving home ... no, you do whatever you can to stop them coming ... he's with you now and is loved and happy and that's all that matters, bless him.0 -
I would suggest getting him neutered, then he will be of no use to them. Reading through the lines, that's all they are interested in, i.e. making money from the stud fees.
As far as I know, even if you had thought of breeding from him, you could not register him, or his offspring, without any paperwork from the breeder/last owner.0 -
Actually I would text and say 'we took him to the vet for his ears and when we mentioned neutering they kept him in and did it all together'.
They won't be snatching him back then!0 -
Yes, I was thinking that as well (Regarding the stud fees). I wonder if this is what they have tried to do (thus hanging onto the pedigree details perhaps themselves?) and then when it hasn't worked out for whatever reason maybe they got rid of him?
But yes, I am extremely concious of him being worth something because he's not neutered and I am keen to do so. Other half (in their typical manly way) isn't as keen as he's not agressive at all and doesn't hump everything but until it's done I am little edgy.
He had a bit of a go at his ears again yesterday poor thing but they seem to be healing up OK other than that.
Thanks for all the suggestions guysXxx

I would say that you have just had a surprise visit from the RSPCA because the vet has reported the dog as showing signs of long term neglect and it would probably be for the best that they don't contact you again, because they are very keen to find out the previous owner details.
I reckon they've just got hold of a female of the breed and it's their latest moneymaking venture.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
Don't let them visit fullstop. It's not for the dogs benefit. And don't leave the dog unattended in the garden unless you are absolutely certain it is secure.0

What for? You are under no obligation to do so at all.
It is YOUR dog, you paid for him, YOU tok him to the vets and got the poor guy sorted healthwise. End of story. Tell them to.. go to ... Spain0 -

I believe the past owners have said they'll post OP the paperwork, so they'll need a postal address (and I suggested giving an alternative address to their home one)0
