If we went SC would there be many places to eat open over Christmas?

We would prefer lively, but not 18-30's lively :D
all the bars restaraunts were open when we were there, including christmas day when we were in tenerife. i believe the spanish celebrate in early january.
if you narrow down your choice of accommodation check the reviews on tripadvisor.
  • The Bahia El Duque area, west of Playa de Las Americas is the upmarket area. It has nice hotels, a white sandy beach, restaurants, bars, shopping. It is an easy walk to the pretty fishing village of La Caleta and in the opposite direction to Fanabe.

The restaurants will all be open, but be aware that they charge the earth on New Year's Eve - the ones in Fanabe didn't though.

I would pick Tenerife over the other islands as there is much more to see and do, and in my experience the weather is better.

..........and remember "lively" at Christmas or out of season is absolutely not the same as the interpretation of "lively" in July and August.

Unless you are seeking solitude and seclusion, I would have no worries that anywhere in the Canary Islands would be "too lively" out of the main season so no worries on that score!

Really? I've been researching them recently and I got the impression Winter is a big season for the Canary Islands - as that's the time everyone in Europe wants to escape the cold.

While I agree that winter is popular for the Canary Islands with people from Europe you will find that it is mostly the older generation that choose to go "long stay" to escape the cold and are joined over the Christmas/New year by younger people and families. The Canaries are known as the islands of eternal spring and cater to all ages, both summer and winter it is busy but MANY families from the UK choose to go during the school summer hoildays and during those times the main resorts are very lively but in comparison the resorts during the winter are busy without the "sunbed fights" type situation you can get in the summer
