Redundant + JSA

Hi

I have been redundant a couple of weeks ago for the 3rd time (all times the company closed down). This last job I was there only 14 months, job before 12 years and before that 7 years.

Desperately trying to find a job, already applied to a few, but another worry is I got a letter from JSA saying:-

they cannot pay me jobseekers allowance from 6th july 2012
because my entitlement based on class 1 national insurance contributions has run out.

Hopefully I will get a job by then but what will happen if I do not, as between my 2nd and 3rd job it took 6 months of looking.

What does this mean? as I pay rent, and live alone with no family members to help me. Its one future worry I dont want to have when Im looking for work.

What does that mean, I will get JSA after July??

Thanks
Shirl

are you sure it doesn't say "contribution based" somewhere in that letter? CB is based on NI. If you are below the savings threshold (you do not have large cash assets sitting or a giant share portfolio for example) then you move to Income Based after 6 months.

CB is for the first six months, regardless of income, and never lasts for more than 6 months.
    Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.
  • Hi

    All it says is

    - We cannot pay you Jobseekers Allowance from 6th July 2012
    - We cannot pay you because your entitlement based on Class 1 National Insurance Contributions has run out

Is that it do you think means contribution based?

I am going up the job center tomorrow for the first visit, I could mention that then.

    thanks

Ah - a benefits question I know the answer to! It mean exactly that. You can't have contributions based after 6th July becaise you have no entitlement - but you can have income based. I have had confused clients ask me the same question so many times... The wording of the letter is awful and scares loads of people to death.
  • Thanks, puts my mind at rest incase I haven't got a job by then.

Have an interview next week, and tomorrow a "chat" with a company that hasn't got a job yet but still wants to see me.

At the moment im positive with things, but if I havent found a job in few months that may change lol

Also remember that for the first 3 months you are entitled to look for exactly the same job and nothing else and the next three months you can hold out for a similar salary as old job but broaden your search to other jobs at salary level

Most job centre staff don't even know this
  • What I do not like is the distance they put on the search, when I filled in the forms with them other week they put had to drive up to 60 mins each way, which to me is too far. They do not take into account the rush hour traffic, my last job took 40-45ish mins each way in traffic but to them 60 mins is over double that distance because they dont take into account this, and also the wages with the petrol. My last job when I started was only 13k but 2 months in I had to ask for a raise luckily i got it to 14.5k as with rent and bills and petrol i just wasnt making anything spare.

Can I please jump in on this thread as I attended interview for JSA yesterday and attend next week to sign on.

Redundant last April, worked part-time on a 3 month temporary contract.Since then I have worked on odd days and covered Christmas on casual. The company are making people redundant so very unlikely much work will come my way.

What I am not sure about is the "working bit". If I work next week for 7 hours I fill the form in and advise them when I sign on. Does that mean they adjust any benefit due to me for that week?

Also, I know I can claim for 26 weeks - If I get to cover anyone for sickness/holiday exceeding the 15 hours is that week suspended for benefit and held as a credit week for me?

I asked about re-training but was told I must ask the adviser next week - any advice, tips you could offer would be great.

Couldn't agree more!!! Once I asked a question about something on the letter. They said "its how it comes out of the printer - the printer does it" !!!!!!! The man was actually being serious

Shirl00, it also means (but dosn't say), that they will pay you up until 12th July 2012.

SallyD It is best to ask the special adviser, they do have more time than when you just sign on. However, I am certain that any money you earn from working will be deducted from your JS Allowance.

There could be help with retraining, I got quite abit of help when I was unemployed between September 2010 and March 2011. I then got a temporary job which took me to October 2011, I havn't been offered anything this time around. But since you are newly unemployed (their term not mine) then there might be more help.

Best of luck to both of you.

I've got bad news for you then because after 3 months you will be expected to travel up to 90 minutes each way - I had my 3 month interview this week and that has been added to my jobseekers agreement.
