So now I have no GCSE/A-level certificates (uni just seemed to believe me? I found that a bit strange, should have stretched my results a bit and gone for a flasher degree!)

I think you will find that your uni did not just believe you....:rotfl:

Uni admissions have direct access to your results - it's how UCAS and UCAS clearing work - they even know before you do what you got !;)

I did suspect as much :D

There are cases where they can't cross check and therefore do need your certificates. But for the majority of admissions it is all verified directly with the examination boards via the UCAS tracking system.

Just think - those days before results when you think it is all about to kick off. The match has actually already been played :D
  • I feel a bit bad that the OP did a runner when he got so many comments saying that he was to blame for not collecting his certificates (rather than the College for not constantly reminding him to collect them.)

I still think the exam boards are worse than either for charging so much for the replacements. If there had been a nominal £5 charge per cert, I am sure the OP would have conceded he should have been a bit more proactive at the time and accepted the situation.

Just a quick update on the matter, I won my small claims court against my College by judgement by default so to all the people who doubted me, I'm laughing in your face right now.

    Like my Dad always says:

"If you don't ask the question the answers always no"

Thanks to the people who actually showed some support and contributed positively!

I think the Vice Principal got it right when he wrote...

(previously mentioned in post #2, but worth repeating)
I really wanted to say what I think of the Vice Principal's way with words, but I'm worried I'd get banned for it...

I find it sad that a supposedly educated person can't use correct English.
Neither can most English people from my experience :)

I'm going to congratulate you - we lost my dad nearly 2 years ago now, and I know my head was all over the place, so I could easily have forgotten things (my Uni days are way behind me now).

So, what did the judge say the college has to do? I hope he/she said that they have to replace the certificates free of charge to you, and the Vice Principal has to attend an etiquette and communications course :)

So you didn't win on the evidence but on the fact that the college failed to file their defence in time. Don't celebrate too soon, they can still have the judgement set aside.

  • Winning because the other side failed to keep to the timescales or turn up is hardly a convincing victory based on anything solid or put you in the right.

Enforcing consumer rights is infrequently about who is actually in the right, it's about getting the right result and if Sirmarcus can show us anything it is he who shouts loudest (or exploits the process) to their advantage will get the result they desire whether or not they are actually in the right.
    Thinking critically since 1996....
