The prevailing wind direction in the UK is West-East, which dictates in which directions the aircraft need to approach from and takeoff to, and the orientation of the runways. So having an airport either to the east of London or to the west of london guarantees that the approaches/takeoffs will always be over London.
If avoiding for safety etc reasons the approach/takeoff paths crossing over London is a prime consideration the airport needs to be south or north of London.
PS I miss the approach to Kai Tak in Hong Kong. Best seat was window, RHS of aircraft when it was doing an approach from over the mainland.0 -
So how is a 4 runway airport and 5 mountains worth of rubble less bad than another 1 mile strip of tarmac, 20 houses and a hairdressers?
Is a village really worth £50 billion?
Just multiply the compulsory purchase by 20, hell whatever, multiply it by 100. Everybody has a price.
One day you will learn that money is not everything.
That day might come when you are burgled and family possessions are stolen, things given to you by people now departed this world. You will realize that the insurance company offering you way over the monetary value is not really compensation at all...................only then will you understand.0 -
It won't happen, it's just Boris beating the drum with the mayoral elections coming up.0

Andy Carroll?
Liverpool sign a new striker from Nigeria. On the first day of training Kenny Dalglish picks up a ball & says "Ball". Then he does a kicking motion & says "Kick". Then he points to the goal & says "Goal - Understand? KICK, BALL, GOAL . . . GOOOAAL!" and the Nigerian says 'Excuse me Mr Dalglish , but I speak perfectly good English' Dalglish says "Sit down son, I'm talking to Andy Carroll"It only takes one tree to make a thousand matches, it only takes one match to burn a thousand trees. As well, the cars are all passing me, bright lights are flashing me.
Johnny Was. Once.
Why did he think "systolic" ?0 -

I think it will....What do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.0 -

Wasn't this something Jacky Charlton said to an overseas player when he was a manager? Or he might have said it purely as a joke on a chat show.Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -
How can something that potentially costs the taxpayer nothing be a waste of money?
The idea that a Thames Estuary airport will cost the taxpayer nothing is laughable.
There would be tens of billions to spend on the infrastructure to get people there (roads, trains etc). No one is suggesting that sovereign wealth funds are going to pay for that.
The obvious place to start is build another runway at Heathrow.US housing: it's not a bubble - Moneyweek Dec 12, 20050 -

What an utter waste of money. On a stupid vanity project. Just stick on another runway at Gatwick and Heathrow.
Not at Gatwick thank you.0
