    very confusing......

For your ethernet wired connection, the wireless encryption should have no impact - what happens when you connect the wired ethernet direct to the kit supplied by Virgin?

It would also help if you gave the model numbers so we can determine what you actually have; for example if you are a cable internet user, I suspect what you are calling a modem is in fact a router (hence if you are connecting two routers then there may be other settings involved).

How many ethernet ports does the "modem" have?

5 down on the left hand menu.

    It was enabled already.

I haven't yet tried the netbook, as the Android phone is following the same pattern as my PC: Password off - internet; password on - no internet.

Every time I enable or disable the password, Windows 7 renames my PC's Home Network incrementally. I don't want Windows 7 Starter on my netbook to do the same, and cause more problems.

The kit supplied by Virgin is just a modem. I plug the modem directly into the PC's ethernet port and it's fine.

The Virgin modem has one ethernet port out.

    The Wi-Fi router is a TP-Link TL-WR841N.

Incidentally, I took that picture on my phone and uploaded it to Dropbox, via wi-fi, not 3G. The phone connects to the router with or without the password; but with the password enabled, there's no internet.

Okay, I am not familiar with TPlinks routers, but I suggest we may need to configure it as an access point which means disabling the WAN side of the router's features. Need to look into the manual to see what it says...............
  • This is what the Network Map looks like. I've right-clicked on the router to look at the properties...

I sort of half feel like just leaving it open. I'm just glad it's working really. How bad could it be if I leave it without a password?

    I need to sleep soon.

Okay reading the manual, it should work as you expect. Just for the record I assume that you are connecting the Virgin media modem to the Tplink wan port.

Can you check the IP address of the virgin media modem? To check it out, connect the PC to the modem, go to programs/accessories/command prompt and type ipconfig - it should tell you - if its also on 192.168.1.n (ie ethe same network as tplink, then we will need to change the IP network address within tplink.

edit - you do not need a wireless passphrase for a wired connection - only applicable to wireless connections.

I'm going to have to sleep. I'm up at seven.

Odd that applying a passphrase shouldn't affect the wired connection - because it does. I've rebooted everything each time too, leaving the power off for a few minutes inbetween.

I'll take another look at it tomorrow evening.

    Thanks for all your help.

If you go to page 26 of the TPlink manual, it tells you how to change the ip network from 192.168.1.1 - I suggest you could try 192.168.254.1. (255.255.255.0) This may just avoid an IP conflict with the modem.
  • I got it working in the end. I should have gotten back to you sooner, to say "thanks."

I basically rebooted one last time and then turned-off the power to both my computer and router for about ten minutes, before turning back on.

I forgot that computers have a habit of “remembering” the last-used configuration of hardware, and any change makes it seem that the hardware’s been removed, rather than changed. Disabling the power for a couple of minutes seemed to erase its “memory.”
