Help With New Wi-Fi Router

I'm hoping that someone can help me. I didn't know where else to ask, after wasting an hour on the phone with Virgin Media.
I think my problem lies with Windows 7, rather than the Wi-Fi router or Virgin.
The router works great. The signal strength on my netbook and Android phone is excellent. My wired connection from the router to my main PC is great too - no apparent loss of bandwidth.
My problem is this...
It all works great - until I configure a password on the router.
I can't get any internet connection on any device (including my main PC) as soon as I encrypt the connection with a password.
I opened-up the router by accessing http://192.168.1.1/ within a browser, and went through the set-up menu.
I've tried a few times now. Password on - no internet. Password off - internet works. When I open the Network & Sharing Centre on my main PC, it's now calling my Home Network, "Network 4" - I think it's been renamed incrementally, upon every attempt.
I've tried to Google an answer, but keep reaching dead-ends. There must be a location, somewhere within Windows 7, where I should be typing "sausages."
That doesn't explain why my Android phone won't get an internet signal, once the password's applied though. Yes, I've deleted each existing open connection, upon reconnecting again, once passworded. The phone will connect to the actual wi-fi router, but there's no internet being transmitted within that wi-fi signal.
What am I doing wrong??? It's driving me crazy!
Virgin put me through to a department whom told me that they knew the answer and could tell me, if I subscribed to some tech-helpline thing, for £10 a month, for a minimum six month subscription!!! The bloody router only cost £29.00.

- The username and password for the router was just "admin." Fine, no trouble with that.
- When asked for WAN Connection Type, I chose "Automatically Detect." All the other options ask for your I.S.P.'s username and password. You're not given a username and password using Virgin's cable modems.
- Password? I chose "sausages." Simple enough for me to remember, but random enough to stop the neighbours leeching from my bandwidth.

You don't say what type of security encryption you are using, just to confirm that you are entering sausages as the encryption code not the ISP password?
To clarify you have, separately:
1. an admin code and password to enter the modem's interface,
2. A user name & password for the Virgin service
3. Encrytion type, and passphrase/code for the wireless security feature
Regarding the latter maybe the following Virgin write-up may help?

Which password are you changing or trying to change?
The passphrase on the router which might be something like qxwtawst or the WPS pin which is an 8 digit number like 67109542?
On my wireless computer I just entered the passphrase qxwtawst when asked for a password and the SID.
Or are you trying to change the default password when you log onto the router.0 -
I have no username and password for Virgin. I just plug the cable in, and it's permanently on.
The one useful thing that the guy at Virgin said, is that there are no usernames and passwords for cable modems.
This is all sort of over my head.
My last router had a code on a sticker, on it's base. Just numbers and letters. It came with that code as a default.
This one has no code. It's just totally open.
I can't explain myself.
I try and enable encryption of the wi-fi signal and the actual encryption works. I can type "sausages" when prompted on my Android phone and it'll connect to the Wi-Fi. There's just no internet when I put the password on. No internet via wi-fi, and I get the yellow exclamation mark on my Windows 7 toolbar.0 -
This is what the configuration screen looks like, when I try to apply the password:

When I plugged the router in, the default setting for "Wireless Security" was disabled.0 -
Assuming you are using a lappie, have you turrned the wifi adapter on?0

It's all wired. My main PC is all wired. The internet isn't working on my main PC when I apply the password to the router.
The Virgin cable modem is wired into the wi-fi router.
The wi-fi router is wired to my PC's ethernet port.
I apply the password to the router and the wired internet to my main PC stops working.
I've not even bothered turning my netbook on yet. It hasn't worked with my Android phone, as a test. The router password works; when my phone asks for a password and I type "sausages" it connects to the wi-fi signal. But there's no internet connection within that signal.0 -
Do you have enable wireless gateway ticked in Wireless? There must be a location, somewhere within Windows 7, where I should be typing "sausages."
Only if your computer is connected wirelessly0 -

Why? It might be your Android phone that is at fault.0 -
Where do I find that?
5 down on the left hand menu.0
