In need of some big help and advice , worried and confused

Big of background

I am 19 , qualified nursery nurse just finished my level 3 (nvq) I am the main bread winner for my family. I have recently been diagnosed with a neurological condition which requires brain surgery in the upcoming 2 months and a long period of time of work. My boss has terminated my contract (it was a trainee contract as I was doing my level 3 with her) so my question is what do I do? Do I take my p45 to the job centre? To I apply for disabilitiy living allowance? (I have lost 90% of the vision in my right eye) my neurologist has confirmed that I am not to work until I have surgery as my conidition is deteriorating fast enough already!

If anyone can help I would appriciate it so much. x

When you say you're the breadwinner for your family, do you mean children and/or partner?

    Bless you junior_j! :grouphug:

I know nothing about the benefit system, but I do know that you are a brave girl and hope you make a speedy recovery after surgery. Don't be scared, you must remain positive. I hope your family are being supportive? xxx

I am wondering whether the termination of contract was legal? I can appreciate that it may have been a contract of 12 months or less, but was it terminated on the grounds of disability? Sar-El is the expert here.

In that case, both your mother and brother should be claiming the appropriate benefits (IB/ESA/DLA) rather than your having to support them.

You should claim ESA for yourself, possibly DLA in the future, and your mother should be claiming HB/LHA/CTB for the family.

    Good luck.
  • Depending on the age of your brother, your mum should also be claiming child tax credit (if he is under 19 and still in full time education).

DLA is only payable if your needs have existed for three months or more and they are expected to last for at least another six months. It is not based on diagnosis, but on care and/or mobility needs. You should investigate ESA, as this may be suitable for you.

    Good luck x

if the consultant has told you not to work, then take notice. apply for ESA.
Birthdays are good for you. Statistics show that the people who have the most live the longest.

Is your mum and brother claiming benefits? - if they are too unwell to work then they should be claiming Employment Support Allowance. If they have care and/or mobility needs then they should be claiming Disability Living Allowance.
Depending on the age of your brother your mum could be claiming Child Benefit.
If this their only income then they should also be receiving Housing Benefit (if you rent) and Council Tax Benefit.

If you are too unwell to work then you need to claim Employment Support Allowance.

Disability Living Allowance may be a possibility but only if you've got care and/or mobility needs which have lasted for 3 months and are expected to last at least a further 6 months. For basic criteria have a look here:

It sounds like you need to speak to a benefits advisor to ensure your household is getting all the financial help it is entitled to. You can call the JobcentrePlus's benefits line on 0800 055 6688
They'll help you work out what you should be claiming and be able to fill out the claim forms over the telephone. I found them really helpful when I had to claim benefits for the first time last year.

You will need to speak to your local council to find out and apply for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit.

    Good luck with your surgery,
