Extremely bad phobia of flyng

I really want to take the kids to Disney world Florida in years to come having just landed the perfect job. But I´m terrified of flying and can´t see me doing so many hours on a flight without scaring the kids. Me and my partner are off to Paris for his birthday later this year so will have to endure an hour and a half. Its been over 6 years since I went on a plane and the thought of it makes me feel physically sick.

Is there any help out there for it? And has anyone had hypnotherapy and it worked?

I know people say being in a car is more dangerous than being on a plane but once its in the air I don´t feel stable like its just going to drop, I listen out for every noise change of the engine and have panic attacks as soon as the door closes.

I am the same, had hypno and it didn't really work, so I went to my GP and now take diazepam before flying. It definitely takes the edge off the anxiety for me. I flew last week and whereas previously as was the same as you described (every little change in engine noise would make me panic), last week I didn't really care, I was just as chilled as I am on a bus/train :D

Sounds like it would be unsafe to be on a plane with you,we all have our limitations and it seems you have found yours.

Yes I´m sure I pose a massive risk to other passengers. Do these words you write actually make sense in your own head? Or have you had a really bad day in your pathetic little life having not found out when the 10p wilkinsons clearance starts. :rotfl:

Ooh I might try that!! Never had diazepam before does it make you drowsy or are you just as normal only more relaxed?

Its the drunks I would be more scared of rather than someone petrified of flying who tends to sit with nails digging into armrest unable to move...............:)

Hypnotherapy and E.F.T could be the answer for you, worked for me.

Reading a lot and understanding noises whilst on the plane, this site is quite useful. http://www.flyingfear.net/

Also try the doctor, I got Diazepam but I'll be honest, they didn't work for me, I just became more hyper vigilant and was exhausted through the fear and travelling endurance test....as it became on that journey.

When you get to the US you can buy Melatonin over the counter at WalMart and Walgreens, these are great for readjusting your body clock re the time difference, on the flight back from Vegas in November I slept for 8 hours.

Good luck with your quest to find something that works for you, I know how truly terrifying the fear feeling is and it can spoil so many things because of the tension and upset.

A number of airlines do fear of flying courses, it may be worth searching for one of these

I too hate flying and have been on very few planes because of my fears.

I went on a long hall flight to China two years ago to visit my son at university there. I found this flight actually quite pleasant because you are in the air for so long. You tend to relax, watch a film have more than one meal. You forget your on a plane and have to land to get off.

If I had to get on a plane tomorrow I would prefer it to be long haul ie America.

  • I had hypnotherapy quite a number of years ago and I would say that it helped with the run up to the flight (i.e. I didn't burst into tears when I thought about it weeks beforehand), but during the flight I didn't find it helped. However, what has massively helped is having more of an understanding about the noises and sensations - you could either read up on this or do one of the fear of flying courses. I'm sure that will help. I've managed to make it as far as New Zealand and a few years ago that would have been unthinkable!

    Good luck!

I am so petrified of flying, I've only flown twice (there and back). I was so worried about flying, I ended up in hospital for 3 days with suspected apendicitis. I was so worried about flying back, I didn't enjoy the trip away, I absoutely hated it, have no desire to go on a plane again. Couldn't stand the height we were off the ground etc. Cannot understand why someone would do something like that in order to go on holiday. There is nothing in the world I want to do so much, that I'd get on a plane again! I don' even think drugs would help.
