Getting shot of landline, good idea?

Landlines will soon be non-existent, due to the younger generation being brought up with mobile phones. The internet's also too powerful for landlines, its so easy to video call somebody anywhere in the world for free!
The companies offer free landline deals as their desperate, give it 5/10 years nobody will have 'em!
So how will the 60% of the population who don't have access to cable broadband get their signal-the broadband fairy? No free lunch, and no free laptop

In all fairness i would imagine in 5 - 10 years mobile broadband will have come a long way, maybe even have dry ADSL where you do not need a live phone line in order to have an ADSL service although i would guess the price would hike on BB to cover the landline cost.0 -
We just swapped (yesterday) from BT (phone) and O2(broadband) to Virgin Media (cable 10MB and phone line, including line rental and weekend calls) in a package for £21 a month for the first year - they have just installed cable in our area, so it is priced to attract new customers. We'll swap back again if.when they increase the price and it gets too expensive. The technicians who did the installing for us told us they are swapping people all the time.
I am now just trying to find out how to make calls mid week with another calling company so as not to incur the ridiculous Virgin fees (9 pence per minute to landlines!!) Virgin have just told me that we would pay for calls to 0808 numbers, whereas I had thought these would be free...0 -
