Wikipedia Blackout

A bit late now I suppose, but for anyone inconvenienced by the Wikipedia 24 hour withdrawal of service you can bypass the blackout by using the Firefox browser with No Script.

Just set Wikipedia to "Untrusted" in No Script and you will be able to access the site as normal.

Also works for Google who have limited certain features of their site for 24 hours.

No excuse for not doing your homework now kids!

Its also possible to use the mobile version of the site:
    replace http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki with http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki

edit: and pressing escape while the page loading also disables the blackout (works in firefox, not sure about other browsers)

You can also bypass it by following the instructions on Wikipedia's blackout page

For anyone wondering WHY it's blacked out, it's in protest against draft laws in the US which will restrict Internet freedom.

Indeed. I've just come across a "boycott SOPA" app on the Android market - scan an item's barcode and it tells you whether it's made or owned by a SOPA supporter, it looks like they are working on a new version which will include a "contact the company" presumably so that you can let them know that you're not buying their product and *why*.

Whilst there's nothing wrong with trying to stop piracy, the way they want to go about it seriously flawed

T'is indeed - sites that have "gone dark" are doing it so for 24h so should be back up at 8am ET (so 13:00 GMT) tomorrow. Even Amazon.com have put a box on their home page "reasons to oppose or modify SOPA" :p

Edit: there's a bit of fun on Twitter under #factswithoutwikipedia such as "Pluto is no longer a planet due to copyright claims from the Disney corporation"

ha I was wondering why I am unaffected by this blackout but now I know, I use Firefox with No Script.

wikipedia isn't a site that requires any script to use (as websites should be) so I don't have it in the whitelist.

Final thought....seems a strange way of protesting against the restriction of internet freedom, by restricting internet freedom.
