Sounds that way to me too.

Who needs the USB hubs at the front when a USB hub will do?

£25 max, to include 1GB or RAM and a USB 2.0 hub.

PB Ixtreme *****? Full model number?

It is the PB Ixtreme VOL C02...

About £20 for a 2GB module depending on model. How much RAM is currently installed? A 10 minute job to fit yourself, or a shop will do it for £15-20.
Go to My Computer, Right click>Properties.
Then use the system scanner on the Crucial site to see what the RAM options are.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Really? That simple? I thought a RAM upgrade would be £150+! Plus fitting... (I wouldn't want to meddle myself) Sorry if I sound thick but does that mean that as there is more memory it would speed everything up too?

Fitting RAM is more simple than you might imagine. You could do it in ten minutes. Yes, it can speed things up considerably.

Should be a four digit number.

Maybe came with 256MB RAM. Are you using it now?

Apparently I currently have 107GB (Total) and the model is the PB Ixtreme VOL C02 or model: 7070 neither of which I can find on the crucial website...

Ok, downloading the scanner now on the ixtreme...

Probably 128MB, that's incredibly low, I'm amazed you can run anything at all on that. If it'll take 1GB, that is the minImum RAM you should be using to try and run XP smoothly.
Even 512MB would make a difference.

    Takes two of these.

At 1GB RAM max, your friend should not have attempted an 'upgrade'.

Thanks so much... I have ordered two and will attempt to fit them myself... (after watching how to online!) If it goes wrong I have nothing to lose I guess as...

Thanks again for the fab advice (not to mention saving me money!) What a wonderful site this is :D

P.S. I wont be letting my friend near it afterwards... he is obviously not as clued up about pc's as he says he is!
