Pausing car insurance??

Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction, as I've tried a few companies but no one can help.

Here's my situation...

I'm a driving instructor, and I have a backup car I would like to hire to other instructors if they need it. Due to the change in law, the car has to be insured when not being used as it is taxed. When someone else hires it from me, they will use their own insurance.

As we can't have 2 policies running for the same car, I've been trying to find a company that will allow me to put my policy on hold as and when needed. So far no joy.

Has anyone else done something similar, or can you suggest another way of doing it? I'd rather not pay an admin fee to cancel and then reinsure the car several times a year.

Cheers

Rob

no law against having two policies on the same car
  • Hmmm.. I'm sure one company mentioned that you're not allowed to. I'll look into it tomorrow.

how do you determine which insurer pays out e.g. if it is stolen not recovered?
  • That was my thought too. Assuming I can't have 2 policies, are there any other options?

Add the other drivers to your policy when you hire it out.

adding the drivers to your policy will likely cost more than suspending your policy and put your NCB/claims record at the mercy of whoever you hire it to.

As I said above, there is no problem with having two policies on the same car
  • There is no legal issue with having two policies but most contracts of motor insurance stipulate they are voided if there is another policy in force. For an accident you'd probably not have issues, though you could if it was miss handled by you/ your hirer, but certainly theft, fire, vandalism etc could be more of a problem.

What proportion of the time is the car hired out? What sort of length is the average hire? ie is it hired 2/3rd of the time but thats 2 days on 1 day off or more like 4 months of continuous use then 2 months off?

Some motor insurance policies have a section which says what they will pay in the event that there is another insurance policy which is also in effect at the same time - usually they say the costs will be shared 50/50 between the two policies.

But, check the policy wording, because they are not all the same, some may not pay out for damage to your car if another policy exists.

Not a term I remember seeing, care to share those that do (so I can avoid them)

On accidents the policy of the driver would pay, on theft etc the policy of the person who was using the car at the time would pay
