Goto Settings => About => Check for update

Or similar, and let it do it's thing.

But, you're relying on T-Mobile having sorted the update in the first place.

Updates are made by phone makers, and sent to the networks, the networks then change them if they wish and approve them for release. Each network will have slightly different firmware (mainly branding) and you can usually only load the updates from the network the phone was originally on. If they haven't approved an upgrade you won't get it.

It may be unlocked but it will still have T-Mobile firmware on it and only accept a T-mobile approved update.

You can "root" and put on any ROM to get around this but thats not a simple process, could break your phone , will void your warranty and not something that can be explained easily in a post.

Yes its still t mobile branded so how do i get the upgrade then,as im sure i had 1.5 on the phone, but did have problems with phone a few months back and rebooted it and fixed my problem now seems to show 1.0 now and im pretty sure its even worse to use as in battery etc as im sure when i update the softwars to 1.5 this helped the battery last longer as did help a few other things to to get the latest one to date would be ace,how do i get this on my phone

Had the the Hero it was first android phone and it was great, its
3 years old so you might be out of luck on updates but there you can
root it and install a custom rom.

It wont effect your warranty as its probably out of warranty now

Best bet is to contact T-Mobile....

This the ROM i recommend, slightly older version of android but comes with HTC Sense

or if you want the latest version of android without the HTC Sense

The real news is that you can't , it will be more time and cost effective to rid of the handset and change to date one,
