Problem transfering Broadband

I'd be most greatful if anyone could offer some advice...

My girlfriend wants to transfer her broadband/telephone from Virgin Broadband (and BT phone) to Orange Broadband and Telephone.

Orange are asking for a 15 digit MAC code from Virgin to transfer the broadband. We have problem because although she is paying the monthly bills for the existing broadband, the Virgin account is set-up in her ex's name, and he no longer lives there or is very co-operative.

We'll obviously try to get him to get the MAC code on our behalf, but failing that would we incur additional costs or loss of service if we were to set-up with Orange without the MAC code (or is this even possible).

Virgin weren't terribly helpful, but it sounds like if my girlfriend stops paying the bills, they'll go chasing the money from him, so hopefully there's enough motivation but we'll see.

Yes, the ex is liable if the DD stops. Without a MAC there will be an additional cease charge applied if the service is terminated, and then a delay in acquiring a new service (maybe a couple of weeks) while the tags are removed from the line.
If she can pass VM security, cannot a male friend (i.e you) go through the MAC process for her?
But I do wonder why anyone would switch to Orange-one of the worst rated ISP's around?
