As they're the parent and therefore legally responsible anyway in a way that a sibling isn't, I think they'd probably be ok.

Depends on policy though doesn't it? These pools aren't enforcing any law; there is no law that states you must be X years old to take someone swimming. Nor is there a law that states you can supervise only one child at a time (see my earlier post).

So the pools are just enforcing their own policies. And if that policy says you must be over 18 before you can supervise a minor, then it matters not one jot that you're the child's mother, sibling or a complete stranger. If you're under 18, you ain't coming in.

I think most pools have a policy similar to this

A responsible person, aged at least 18 years of age, must accompany all Children under the age of 8.

In addition to this we operate the following child to a responsible person ratio.

Children under the age of 4 must be accompanied by a responsible person on a one to one basis.
Children aged between 4 and 7 years must be accompanied by a responsible person on a maximum of a 2 children to a 1 adult basis.

But I would check with your local pool exact terms.
  • I used to go to the pool by myself when I was 8 or 9, back in the 50's.

I also went to the local park by myself, and down to the beach in summer. and played out in the street until all hours ....

What a society we've turned into.

So Tom Daley couldn't go on his own.

    Bonkers..
  • Has the world gone mad?

Let's make it really difficult for older sibling to teach their brothers and sisters to swim.

Powers that be, wake up to the fact that pool is being under used.

Decide to close pool in order to save money.

Pool workers thrown on the dole heap.

    Kids don't learn to swim.

    Job done!

Hrmmm is that an overly simplistic view point?
    I'm not that way reclined

Jewelry? Seriously? Sheldon you are the most shallow, self-centered person I have ever met. Do you really think that another transparently-manipu... OH, IT'S A TIARA! A tiara; I have a tiara! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me!

I agree! We used to go down the beach (no pools around my hometown then!!) on our own from about 8, and I'm still here!! Learnt to swim dammed quick as well, no fancy lessons, more like a shove off the deep end of the pier at 9!! That's how we all learned then! :D And no one ever drowned either, the older kids "kept an eye open". I often wonder how society will be in 20/30/40 years time, when people will have lost the ability to do sod all, as they were so cosseted as kids!!

My daughter always goes swimming on her own with friends. She is 12. Her friend takes her sister, 12 & 9. Is it different in different areas? Our pool is not gov funded perhaps that is the difference?
