Would you let your child have a day off school to see you graduate?

    Absolutely Yes,

Personally I would also consider taking your son as well. As long as he has things with him to do whilst waiting and a few sweets.

and well done. I didn't even go to my own graduation ;)

I went to my first one. When I got my second degree (a much better one which took a great deal of effort as I was working and also raising 3 kids) no-one in this household seemed too bothered so I felt very discouraged and didn't go to the graduation. Shame really. :(

Hope you have a fab time, thatgirlsam, you deserve it. :T

I personally wouldn't, but then I didn't go to my own so sending my, then, 3 kids would have been pointless. I just, for myself, don't like the graduation ceremonies and don't see the point of them, I don't see them as a culmination of 3 years of education or as much of an achievement - don't get me wrong, I'm glad I did my degree because I couldn't practice as a midwife without it, but I was more proud of me working in the profession I wanted to than getting clapped etc whilst picking up a piece of paper (because often it isn't even the actual degree during the ceremony)

    Yes definitely!

I didn't attend my graduation ceremony not sure why really but I did attend a friend's a few years later and really wish I had now!

I had a day off school to see my dad graduate when I was in Year 8. I'm pretty sure it did me no harm. I'm not sure how much it inspired me as I was pretty academic by that point anyway. But it did make me very proud of my Dad.

So in my view school can wait for a day.

OK, so it can be a bit boring waiting while everyone troops across the stage but what an occasion! There are usually lots of funny incidents where individuals are cheered loudly and even whooped to keep everyone entertained. If it's in a splendid hall then it's even more memorable.

I would have a little chat with your daughter beforehand and explain what is happening so she knows what to expect.

I was thinking about it being boring for a 6 year old, a bright 12 year old should certainly be able to cope and, hopefully, get something from the speeches as well.
  • I must admit that the only graduation I've ever been to was that of OH and tbh apart from the 2 minutes (if that he was on stage) I was bored stiff....and I was alot older than 12.

Reminds me of my son's graduation. One of his group was married, she had a baby during her degree and her husband brought the baby along, complete with cap and gown. I don't know where they got it from or if they made it but he looked so cute having his photo taken with his mom.

Just to make it clear the baby was wearing the cap and gown, not the husband.

I have warned her she might find it boring but she says she still really wants to come

She said she wants to see the look on my face when I get my certificate :D

And she also said its a bit like a Mum who wants to see her child in a school assembly.. it may be boring but you feel really proud!

Graduation ceremonies are as dull as dishwater, but if she really wants to go then I don't see the problem.
