Would you let your child have a day off school to see you graduate?

This is a bit of a petty problem in the grand scheme of things but I just can't make up my mind what to do

I have my graduation from university on 29th March, it is a Thursday and I am allowed to book 2 tickets

My Mum will be coming to see me and my daughter who is 12 has asked if she can come too

But she would have to have a day off school, probably would be unauthorised

She would so love to see me graduate, she has seen the massive struggle I have had to get to this point

The other problem is if I let her come would my 6 year old son be gutted he wasn't there

I'm not sure he would sit quietly through the ceremony, whereas I know my dd would

I need to book the tickets soon and I don't know what to do!

There is an adult price and a childs price for the tickets so I guess they are presuming that some children will attend

Would it be enough of a worthwhile experience for her to see me graduate? Or is it unjustified to take her out of school for a day to do this?

She has 100% attendance so far

Thoughts please :)

  • Yes, absolutely. You are an inspiration, and it's good for her to see this for herself. The only exception to this is if there was an important exam that day.

It is likely she will be bored though - a graduation ceremony is not particularly interesting!

I think if she doesn't have anything specific that day (eg. exams) it would be lovely. I know the ideal is no time off during term-time but this is a one-off special occasion. Plus, it may help inspire her to work even harder!

They can drag on a bit though, so I'd agree that your son might not enjoy it, even if there were a way of getting another ticket. Maybe you could plan something for the evening to include him, a nice meal out somewhere maybe?

    Oh, and congratulations!

Aw thanks, yes I would like her to see the results of a lot of hard work!

She might be bored but she is a very good girl so I know she would sit quietly

I'm worried my son will feel left out though..

I did think about having a small graduation party at home so they could both see me in my cloak etc afterwards

I wonder if the school would think I was naughty for taking her out for this.. I need to speak to them

  • Yes. This is a very special occasion. If you explained to the school, I'm sure they would be fine, its motivational. Well done!
    Oh well...

Definitely let her go, she'll be so proud and at 12 I don't think she'll miss anything she can't catch up on. She could easily miss a day with a stomach bug or a migraine, its only a day! 100% attendance is great, but I think its silly to worry about it too much.

I'd tell your son a little white lie, that only children over 10 are allowed, or that its a boring grown up thing like church, something like that.

Congratulations! Are you a midwife now then? I'm impressed, I couldn't do that job for all the money in the world!
  • I'd say yes too and also I'd be really surprised if the school object. I don't think your son will miss out really and he can get his inspiration perhaps from his sisters future graduation. Congratulations.

If you're hiring your cap and gown you generally have to give them back straight after the ceremony, might be worth checking that if you're hoping to keep them for longer.
