Dating and Money-saving don't mix!

I've just started dating again... I thought I could avoid it for a year so I could focus on my money saving, but hell, a girls gotta have a little fun!

Anyway, so the dating thing has been happening for a couple of weeks, and that bit is going great, but I've just remembered how expensive this dating lark can be! Coffee, cinema, going out for food, takeaways... it has probably added up to about £200 between us in the past 2 weeks!

Any ideas for cheap dates (I don't want to use that term but can't think of another one! :p)? I know we could go for walks etc, but at this time of year it's not very appealing! Also, i'm not the best cook, hence the takeaways and eating out!

Go to the cinema on a Wednesday, Orange Wednesdays 2for1 and get your sweets/drinks in the supermarket before hand. Get him to cook for you :D Get takeaway from places when they have special offers on i.e Dominos/Pizza Hut 2 for 1 Tuesdays. Me and OH had a nice meal out at Frankie & Bennys tonight as they do 25% off on Mondays, so we both got 3 courses for £30 between us.

Staying in and watching films with microwavable popcorn etc, carpet picnic :p

If anyone ever complains about new shoes, ask them if they have heard of cinderalla - a piar of shoes really can change a girls life
  • that was a joke, there are some really beautiful sunsets this time of year just wrap up warm

Glad you are joking, i was scrolling down waiting for that response. My view has always been that dating is an exercise of mutual benefit (hopefully) and so the costs should be bourne equally.

Anyway, there's stacks of free/cheap things to do. A bit harder in the winter with cold/dark evenings though i appreciate.

    I hear ya!

I've been on a number of dates recently (sadly they haven't led on to second dates for a number of reasons!) so each date is a new start and therefore a new cost!

I think when you start dating someone new you need to accept that it will cost a wee bit to indulge in these activities that can help the relationship to flourish BUT as others have suggested, you can keep the cost down by using 241 vouchers and staying in instead of going out. I'm just as happy watching a DVD in the house with some popcorn and the lights down, rather than going to the cinema.

Is your new man any good at cooking? If so and you're no good in the kitchen, why don't you try whipping up a few things in the kitchen together rather than going out? You don't need to go an expensive restaurant to have a romantic meal

Or, I've got a Jamie Oliver book intended for beginners and it's really good and pretty simple, so give it a try! Rent it from the library or invest, it only costs the same as one take away!

Would impress me that a man didnt want to spend a fiver on popcorn and the same on drinks when you can get it far cheaper. God if you went on orange wednrsday you could both probably get a pizza express for the price pf sweets amd drinks in the cinema!

  • Is there any cheap theater where you live? When i lived in London (oh those heady days...) I could nearly always get standing / far back seats for £5-£10.
