Lloyds TSB expired Debit Card

Hi I'm new to the forum and wondered if someone can enlighten me as to what an expiry date on the card means? My understanding is when a debit card expires it becomes null and void and can not be used to purchase anything by the holder, however, we have just noticed a recurring transaction on our bank statement from "shopperdicounts.co.uk" which has been running unnoticed since Apr 2007. The debit card associated with this transaction expired on Jan 31st 2008 but there have been 50 x £8 further unnoticed transactions since the card expired!! Our statments clearly show the old expired card number for each of the 50 transactions....Lloyds TSB are claiming it doesn't matter that the card has expired as it was set up as a subscription which we have no record or recollection of ever dealing with this company. It just seems so wrong that when a card expires the card holder can no longer use the card yet money can still be taken out from your account by business' who have OLD EXPIRED card details...please can someone advise as surely this cant be right?

It sounds like a re-ocurring payment authority has been set up on the card.
I would contact the company involved to see if they have account set up in the persons name:

I would also recommend you check your statements in more detail in future.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -

& before you ask it's not the banks faultCan I find out my credit score? You do not have a single credit score or rating. Different organisations take different information into account when working out your credit score and may have different scores for different products. (Kindly from Experian)0 -
I thought Definition of Expire = To come to an end; terminate
The card should be invalid from its expiry date...else why have an expiry date at all. I certainly couldn't use it after it expires, or can I.0 -
Signature removed club member No1.
It had no link, It was not to long and I have no idea why.0 -
The recurring transaction was set up on a card that was valid at the time.
The vital words here are "recurring" and "set up"
No transactions were set up or done on invalid/out of date cards.
This is how you car insurance is still paid out of your card even though the card has become out of date, because it was initially set up on a valid card at the time as a recurring transaction ad-infinitum - until cancelled.
Then again perhaps you'd prefer such things could not happen and then if your card becomes invalid during the year your car insurance cannot be paid and you will be guilty of driving round without insurance - maybe not such a good idea after all.0 -
