If you intended to suggest locking the door with the visitor outside, why not just explain that you want to confirm their details. Afaik their ID should have a number you can ring to confirm the details. No need for any cloak and dagger or "discreet" action.
However if you intended to suggest locking the door with the visitor inside, you'd leave yourself open to charges of false imprisonment if they were genuine. Which would be a bit silly. Whereas, if they were masquerading you'd stand a good chance of being on the receiving end of a bit of violence.
