I can't do a link, but from a quick google, it seems that Performance Measurement within DWP are doing some random Housing Benefit checks. It may be a genuine visit.

I'd think that random checks were a far more effective tactic than visits arranged in advance.

You could decline to give them to him personally. Cite security concerns and ask for an address to which you can send them. Then check the address out.

Are you saying what I've posted is rubbish, really?? I think you'll find DWP will deal with Housing Benefit if you are claiming JSA, Income Support or ESA - you form will be done via the Jobcentre rather than you having to go to two separate offices. The Local Authority may process it, but I would imagine that as entitlement is via a DWP benefit, DWP then take on some form of responsibility for checking.

I may not be able to do links however if you Google 'Fraud and Error in the Benefits system preliminary 2011' the first document will bring you up DWP reports. Scroll down to Key Points, Access Latest Publication (PDF file), Paragraphs 1.8 and 1.9 may clarify what the OP has questioned.

The survey clairelh refers to also covers housing benefit recipients (para 1.6) so that could explain why you've been contacted.

Apologies, however I was just trying to illustrate that DWP DO deal with Housing Benefit. The report I've directed to, also mentions the Performance Measurement team.

I guess I only wanted to try to reassure you that you may have had a genuine visit and also it may not have anything to do with your partner as others were implying. Didn't reckon I'd be told I was talking rubbish and hadn't read your original post.

There were random checks down by DWP about 5-6 years ago when I was on HB/CTB for a period - part of its a direct anti-fraud mechanism and also to check the council are checking peoples details correctly.

HB/CTB is run by local authorities on behalf of DWP . DWP do checks on both claimants and the councils on a regular basis.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
