"We don't believe our problem is too much capitalism - we think it's that too few people have capital.''

"We need more individuals to have a real stake in their firms. More of a John Lewis economy, if you like.''

"And what many people don't realise about employee ownership is that it is a hugely underused tool in unlocking growth.''

"I don't value employee ownership because I believe it is somehow 'nicer' - a more pleasant alternative to the rest of the corporate world. Those are lazy stereotypes.''

"Firms that have engaged employees, who own a chunk of their company, are just as dynamic, just as savvy, as their competitors. In fact, they often perform better.''

    I've been Money Tipped!
I tried to buy a computer from John Lewis recently. It was not successful, whilst people were very nice the click and collect system failed when, after customer care closed the payment, which was successful at mid day, failed on a security check (which we were told was common with the type of product...they run an almost standard fraud security check but if the customer is out of contact or their customer service closes the customer doesn't know and makes a futile and expensive one hour each way run in the car to be explained to that the card goes through in the shop which is fine, but they didn't send the product to the shop from warehouse because it failed the click collect protocol.

So......while I still like jl the idea of the country becoming more inept, less resourceful and more computer says no is fairly unappealing. The good manners would be nice though.

I bought my telly from John Lewis after spending ages looking for a good deal and they had a good deal. The telly was as cheap as anywhere else on the net and came with a 5yr warranty..........

They arranged delivery and it turned up on time so I could'nt ask for much more.

    Love HD tv...........Happy days.:D

I always thought they were expensive but I've changed my mind and will definately shop there again.

It's also worth mentioning they offered to price match with Internet for us too when I complained...

    unbeliveable

country is almost going into recession, banks still unreformed, euro area in chronic difficulites, UK about to break up and Nick comes up with a unthoughtout half baked asperation (calling it an idea would be too strong)

Great idea if you ask me, I have made some serious dosh from sharesaves and currently have my work one maxed out and have other money in mates/families sharesaves. Its a pity there is a limit on what you can put in (£250), would be nice if Nick could get this relaxed and make it zero capital gains tax on such investments. This could deffo help the economy instead of It going to the taxman.

The theme of the Clegg speech seemed a little familiar. Ah yes ... Thatcher.

in what way would it help the economy other than increasing taxation for people without access to such schemes?
  • errrr try me not having to pay CGT so I spend it on a new tv, car who knows. I am already a big fan of investments and the share saves are what got me started if others had the oppotunity to invest at NO RISK maybe the countrys personal debt level would have been a lot less.

They (sharesaves), are brilliant I once bought some which increased x14 and I currently have another (via a mate), which is x4 if the share price had dropped I get my savings back. NO RISK

You mean he plagiarised an old idea.

Anyway there is a article on this site http://blogs.channel4.com/factcheck/ that states that employee owned companies do better for a number of reasons one of them is that in boom times banks don't want to lend to them so they can't get into a lot of debt.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p
