If I cancel Sky, what could I view?

I've a multiroom set-up and am now out of contract. I need to cut my costs and will call to haggle with Sky.

Before doing so, I wanted to understand what, if anything, I'd be able to view on the 2nd set-up if I cancelled the multiroom. Is there a freesat option?

Thanks
Uh?

  • Easiest way is to pull the card out the box and see what you're left with.

You can view all the Freesat from Sky channels (not Freesat-that's a different platform).
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

When you cancel your sub, Sky just turn off the decryption, so the subscription channels can no longer be viewed or recorded.
It's the same platform, but without the subscription channels.
You will of course lose all Sky+ functionality and recordings.

Taking the card out is not the same - you'll only get the unencrypted channels. You would want to cancel (and you won't be able to record, or view recordings) and leave the card in. The card then becomes a FreesatFromSky card, and you have those channels available.
    These are the FreesatFromSky channels:

Freesat is a different platform, on different boxes, that uses the same satellite dish pointing at the same satellite.

    Anyone got netflix.com?
Just seen an advert for the above and would be interested to know if anyone has subscribed.I know I would need to connect to the tv with an hdm cable but would I need to disconnect the hdm cable that carries the freesat or could I use the hdm2 socket.I can't believe it would be so straightforward.

Seeing as it's a streaming service then you need a network-enabled device to receive the signal, connected to your home broadband router (by cable or wirelessly {may need a separate wireless dongle})

This could be a network enabled TV (many are now) or PVR or blu-ray player, a PC or even a set-top box. You can connect any of those via HDMI to a spare HDMI socket on your TV.

Either way, whatever you use is probably going to need a software update to be compatible with the netflix application - check with the manufacturer of the device.

You will get the channels listed on this wikipedia entry as Free to Air or Free to View.

Yes indeed. I used to have the basic Sky package - and only because there is no aerial signal where I live. I swapped to Sky Freesat after a year or so on subscription and just continued with the same equipment. There's not much difference in the channels available. Best thing I ever did. :T

Additionally, you could use an XBox or (I believe) a Wii to access Netflix.
