New Boiler

Options
We have got a combi-boiler (revenheat) it is rubbish and about to break down, all we need is a new boiler, all pipes etc are OK. Can anyone give me any idea what to go for? should I buy one through British Gas? does anyone also have an idea of the cost? Thanks:p

Here is a good place to start. A RGI, after conducting a site survey and discussing your requirements, would be best placed to advise on cost etc for your boiler installation.

I'll leave the comments about BG to others.;)

Ask to see CIPHE (Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering)

Thanks so much, from the research I have done, I can see that it would be best to AVOID BG :o

If she doesn't pay that additional 40% how will the poor engineers get their 40% commission? :D

  • I just got a quote from British Gas....just for a laugh!

When I mentioned weather compensation and intelligent controls that are available with Viessman and Vaillant boilers (and others no doubt), the ex BG fitter turned salesmen stated British Gas don't do such things in their offerings (not even sure he actually new what I was talking about, although he tried to talk me out of it saying I probably wouldn't benefit from the extra cost of these things).

He gave three options all of which came in suspiciously just below the £2500 which I have seen quoted as being the average cost of a replacement boiler (probably a figure promoted by British Gas themselves). Interesting how he forgot to include the spirotech magnabooster on the most expensive of the options, which would have brought the total cost of that option to about £2600, which starts sounding really expensive (for a straightforward replacement).

Very disappointing that British Gas, apparently "the UK's largest installer of domestic central heating" (according to the brochure) doesn't offer the technology to maximise the efficiency of modern condensing boilers, but charges "about average" for what amounted to the most basic boiler replacement that you could get ... oh but included a special offer £208 power flush!

No thanks BG, I will choose my own system and get someone competent to fit it.

Only £600? You must know someone on BG.
I quoted a powerflush the other day and BG had quoted the same job as £1100!!!

Their surveyor dropped his flint lock gun and mask on the way out!

I've got a Ravenheat about 8yrs old and have been 2mths without heating, so agree about them being rubbish, They've been out to fix it 5 times each time going away for more parts which they struggled to find, Finally the insurance have said it's not worth fixing and offered me £750 towards a new one. The heating engineers have given me a quote for £1850 for a Ariston, so taking off the insurance leaves me £1100 to pay. The new boiler comes with a 5yr guarantee and as i've been paying £165pa for insurance which i wont now need i'll save at least £825, more if we presume the insurance will probably increase, so over 5yrs i'll be less than £300 worse off. And hopefully have a better boiler.

`You need to ask for the powerflush with the 40% already taken off...
