Ikea refusing to uphold guarantee...

I have 2 Ikea Pax wardrobes, with Nexus sliding doors. I purchased these in September 2005.
I believe them to have a 10 year guarantee, so last week when we came to move the wardrobes to have new carpet fitted, and they collapsed in to a heap, and wood broke off everywhere, I contacted Ikea.
Woman on the phone took all the details, including details of purchase date, and receipt details. She gave me a reference number, and told me that someone would contact me with in 48 hours to arrange an inspector to come out and view the damage.
Today, I received a phone call telling me that my claim was invalid, as they did not have a 10 year guarantee when I bought them - they only started giving the guarantee in 2008.
Which is strange, because I was sure there was a 10 year guarantee when I purchased them - or why would I have known to contact Ikea in the first place?
Does anyone have any advice for me? I paid £500 for these bloody wardrobes, and they are now sitting in a heap in my bedroom, and the house is strewn in clothes, and I'm living in bloody chaos.
I need a speedy resolution!

Due to the amount of time you've had them you'd need to prove they offered a 10 year guarantee at the time of purchase.0

Would any guarantee cover them being moved or lifted anyway?Science adjusts its views based on what's observed.
Faith is the denial of observation, so that belief can be preserved.

We have Ikea wardrobes, and I dismantled them to move them. I'd never dream of moving them fully constructed. It's just chipboard underneath the veneer, which isn't particularly strong.0

Likewise. Mine have been disassembled twice and assembled three times.Science adjusts its views based on what's observed.

I remember a mate of mine tried to move her ikea wardrobes.......they collapsed. When i pointed out she hadn't even at least emptied them before moving them.....she couldn't see the significance in what i was saying.
On another note, i've had ikea wardrobes in a 2nd bedroom which were purchased in 2003 and they're still going strong - touch wood (that wont be the wardrobes then)You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
What does it say about guarantees on the receipt0

The guarantee only covers manufacturing defect anyway. It would not cover them falling to pieces when being moved. This would be caused by being moved incorrectly or not being assembled correctly, which are both outside of Ikeas control...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Once you are absolutely certain that a ten year guarantee is in force, take both your receipt and the guarantee documentation to your nearest Ikea and show them.0 -
I hope you get some joy out of Ikea OP.
Their customer service towards me and several friends for different reasons (kitchen delivery & condition, rude staff, overcharged in store etc) at the MK store has been absolutely horrendous.
The managers really don't have any concept of goodwill or being helpful at all...0 -

On the other hand, Wednesbury, Nottingham and Coventry staff have been nothing but exceptional to us in the many visits we've made - we've even taken built items back due to ill advice when planning the kitchen and buying a bed, both times refunded, no problems...0
