I have a huge roll of bubble wrap from when I used to sell and post pushchairs and will start collecting newspapers. I'm sure I still have a couple of flat packed boxes too. We don't actually have that many breakables, it's mostly CDs, DVDs etc. and canvas pictures etc.

I don't buy any of the local papers usually but I think they are out on Thurs/Fridays so will get them. Been searching online and will post on Facebook groups too.

My OH has plenty of friends but I can't imagine any of them helping seeing as he has been lazy and refused to give them help with moving, decorating etc. in the past!

    He sounds like a catch...

I have friends who can help me paint etc. once we are moved but nobody who could help with the lifting down the stairs as my friends are all as small as me and most have small children!

Would one of these friends not at least mind your daughter overnight for you?

My brother, my Dad and my sisters OH are all lazy sods too. I would simply get no for an answer. Apart from that there is not a single person!!

I just can't fathom this. You are their daughter/sister, pregnant with their grandchild/niece/nephew, and needing help to move house, and none of them will help you out? If my family were like that, I doubt I could be bothered with them at all.:(

My Mum can't have my little one overnight as she already has her on a Weds, Thurs and Friday days while I work and works full-time including nights from Sat - Tues so couldn't squeeze an overnight in.

Fairy nuff I suppose, sounds like she does help you out a lot (though if it were my mum she'd still bend over backwards to help in this situation, she'd probably take a day's leave from work or something).

My OH is making this difficult and refusing to take a holiday from work so the move has to be done hopefully on a Saturday so I have his help on the Sunday to get unpacked.

I'm not quite clear why moving on a Saturday makes things more difficult? But if your OH is being less than helpful/proactive about the whole situation, maybe you should give him a kick up the a55? This isn't just your problem, after all. If he can't be bothered moving to a bigger place, he shouldn't have gotten you pregnant again.

You can get FREE strong boxes from McD's

I used them for my flitting and was able to do all my own packing. Remember to mark on the outside of the boxes the contents, this helps at the other end for boxes to be put in the correct rooms.

Good luck with the move
  • You can fill suitcases up with items too. I have a large one (amongst others) on wheels that is full of winter coats and other odds and sods. We found them so usefull for transporting items.

I must admit you sound as if it is you doing all of the removal. Your other half should be ashamed of himself if he will not put himself out to help others. This has now backfired as no one wants to help him.

Do you have a local volunteer group.
Someone somewhere must want to earn a few pounds helping with this.

I can't think why you'd spend money hiring a van if your farmer friend will lend his tractor and trailer. (It is a closed in trailer?) So, that just leaves hiring a man to help with the moving of stuff - £7-8 an hour cash would do it round here. Maybe stick an ad in the newsagent's window? If he and your OH are strong, they can move the chests of drawers and such-like full!!
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Hey we used a man and a van...we told him that we won't be touching a thing....we couldn't get many boxes from supermarkets...so we got those blue bags for 40 p each from ikea....they helped a lot...it made things easier for the man too..

We did our move in £60.... You will perhaps manage in £100... Call around and get quotes ....

Make sure you have someone for backup too....
  • If your OH has been an unhelpful git by not lending a hand to his mates, perhaps he hasn't managed to alienate all of his work-mates yet. Nearly all small businesses have vans and drivers. Perhaps a local company would be willing to rent you one of their vehicles and a driver?

Think laterally. Dump some of this problem on your OH. That pal of his with a new baby could be prevailed upon to watch your nipper for a few hours instead of doing a load of heavy lifting......

I was going to suggest Tesco / Morrisons bags which are also around 40p. I used them for moving my son houses when at uni. Fantastic and much easier to carry especially for things like books, dvd/s and games and the handles on the bags meant that we could carry one in each hand as opposed to one box between two.

Oh and 21 years ago this year, I moved house from 15 floors up in a multi, with a 1 year old, 3 months pregnant with 2nd child into a semi with my kids dad. We hired a van and got hold of a couple of friends and the hardest bit was the trying to get the stuff in the lift. Really felt sorry for the other residents, but some of them even offered to help.

(Bad thing was house I moved into had wood worm and I had to move again when new baby was weeks old, then move back to house I'd originally swapped into 9 months later - Yip 3 full house moves in a year).

Any local teenagers who may want to earn a few bucks?

Have a look for a man with a van in your area on Facebook, we have loads here and they are all really cheap and will do the lifting
  • 3 months isn't that far along, an hour and a half isn't a morning's travel if you leave early, and a tractor and trailor sounds great. Can't see the problem. It's only 1 day.
