You'll need to provide more info.

When you say you tried to setup an email address in Thunderbird, do you mean register for one or set one up?

Which provider are you trying to use?

Generally, the mistakes that I tend to make with Thunderbird account settings are 1. to get the username wrong for login to the mail server - it's ~sometimes~ not the same as the email address 2. getting the server name/type wrong and 3. failing to select "server requires authentication" if/when it's mandatory.

The easiest way to get it fixed is to go to the Help and Support section of the email service provider - most have a walk-through or full guide on setting up all of the main email clients.

I'm with Plusnet and they have a really clear guide, I've spent since 11am going through the bloody thing . It all seems right and yet still I get this error message-
An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: <*********.plus.com> sender rejected - invalid domain (no MX or A record). Please verify that your email address is correct in your Mail preferences and try again.

You must already have a email address to start with. = yourname@somewhere.com, so that could be with gmail, hotmail yahoomail, etc.
as you enter the details into lets say hotmail, copy the info into notepad and save as email.txt so that the address and password are as you typed when you set up the email account.

Then you enter the details into thunderbird via the accounts section using the email.txt to copy the details.

If you are using POP3, the servers should be set as follows:

    Incoming (POP3): mail.plus.net

    Outgoing (SMTP): relay.plus.net

I'm assuming your Broadband is with PlusNet?

It seems that you may be trying to use your username in one of the servers?

    I'd look into this.

Yes I think the OP may be confusing the login/E-mail address with the POP3 server.
