So 3.5 hrs ago i pop in so that will be 5 pages to catch up then...at this rate NPT6 (Forum under siege) will be needed a lot sooner than I expected.
SilverC is there any access for a mini-digger to the garden? How about barrowing out the clay, will that have to come through the house? What are your time-scales? Do you have a size in cubic metres in mind or do you need advice on that?Just need the big pit at the bottom of the garden, though adding a pipe run from the top end would be an option if it wasn't too expensive.
Not my home BTW, but not too far away. Total garden is about 30 foot long be 15 ft wide. Naturally slopes towards the far end but the whole garden stays wet for too long. Neighbours seem to have patio-ed over their gardens leaving all the rainfall to end up in this one. With nowhere to go
Edit: No Eurovision here, perhaps it is because we are pretty much tea-total?I think....0 -

Legally there is access via the neighbours patio, there is a narrow gate in the fence. Not sure if a digger would fit through the gate; I'm guessing that wheel barrows are made the width of gates.
I thought soak aways were about 2 foot in diameter and about 6 ft deep. That was certainly enough to sort out drainage problems in my old house.
Given that the garden already slopes downwards, I thought the dug out muck could be spread around and bits of turf relayed on top????
This isn't a luxury garden and the remit is to improve the drainage from heavy rain in summer, rather than install some posh irrigation system.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. In my old house the builders had no problem getting a mini-digger down a shared access then across a neighbours patio to ours. (The neighbours were not at all pleased but couldn't do anything about it.)
This seems to have a fair bit of detail on sizes needed but I'm still not sure if you are looking for a soak-away from a roof/patio or in fact need to improve the drainage of the whole garden area?
We are on Clay and the soak-away hole was about 2.5m deep and 2m square and when it rained the water just seemed to sit there rather than disappear. tbh...WE also left the old soak-away (found the pipe and you can see in the grass where it runs too but not sure how big it was. This is to drain 64m2 of roof and 35m2 of patio though.
TheProfessionalShopper Alert: As an aside did you know that if all your surface water drainage goes to soakaways and none in to the mains drain you can claim a rebate on your water bill?I think....0 -
