Get a contract to put the booths inside existing buildings, posher places. If they're not out on the street you won't get the riff raff clogging them up. The marketplace for callers will be smaller, but more lucrative. Smaller marketshare, but bigger income potential and less risk/maintenance required of the booths.

OK, if the booths are existing, then I'd make the free calls automatically drop after 3 minutes, so the free callers had to redial.

That's good and also low-tech like the real solution. Only catch is that the callers would moan to each other that the company keeps cutting you off and it might put customers off.

As I understand it, the problem is to put people off making long local calls from your phone boxes, without putting them off using your boxes to the extent that they use your competitors' ones instead. I'm stuck. Pick a time and announce it, zag.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I'll try to announce it at 12.30 on the thread unless anyone gets the right answer before.
It's worth noting that like most booths in this country, the booths had no seat for the caller to sit down.
And that callers making long distance calls were paying more and so naturally tended to make shorter calls than the local callers, becasause they were aware of the price.;)

Make long distance calls cheaper after ten minutes?

But doesn't solve the booth being clogged up by free local calls, unless you drop local calls after 20 minutes?

But there are competing phone companies and they didn't want customers to moan they were getting cut off after X minutes

Ah - so you can just encourage short calls per se. How about installing seats that slope slightly forwards, making people feel they want to stand up, without necessarily being aware of why?

Timing pips? Not just watching money disappearing.

I remeber something about phones from university. They could set the phones in the foyer of the halls EITHER to recieve incoming calls or make reverse charge calls, cannot remeber which or to be able to make international calls.....not both. That must be relevant thinking about it.
