British Gas price fix customer - no reduction

Options
I have a price fix until April 2009 and from the information on their web site, it appears that I will not get the price reduction for this particular fix (each price fix has different rules). So my gas and electicity will not be reduced. It also advised on the site that if I wish to change tarif or change supplier, I will be subject to a cancellation charge of £30 for gas and £20 for electricity!! British Gas have also increased my direct debit for electricity from £15 to £19 a month although I am in credit, albeit by only a couple of pounds, despite several emails to them asking them not to. I have also emailed them three times with various questions, as their online billing system has been 'being upgraded' for months and they seem to have lost my night units on my electricity bill, I have also asked them to advise me of my annual consumption as it is impossible to calculate, all to no avail, Customer service is non existant. I am disgusted with them but seem to be stuck with them.

I may be on the same tariff but how do I tell? The BG "help" pages say that it's indicated at the top right of the paper bill - but I have paperless billing! Have emailed BG but no response which appears to be par for the course.
  • Isn't that the point?!

You fix the price so that increases won't apply to you and you'll be better off. But if the prices fall you lose out.

Same principles as fixed rate mortgages. I can't understand why you think you should benefit when they go down as well as up??!!

The cancellation terms of this deal were perfectly clear when you signed up, as was the fact that the rates were fixed - indeed, as brazilian points out, that was the entire point.

You can't have your cake and eat it.

Having said that, the cancellation charges are not very high IMHO.

Price protection 2009 has been about 10% cheaper than BG's normal rate since last September, so although it is now slightly more expensive, the average household will have saved more than the cancellation fee over the last few months, so if he cancels it he won't have lost out.

Also his current prices are guarenteed until 2009 - British Gas are currently only offering to fix their current prices until 2008.
  • Hi

I'm on Price protection 2010 and all the comparison sites tell me I can't get a better deal...not even click energy 2. Have u tried the comparison sites to see if u will actually be better of switching?

    Una:money:
  • I haven't tried a comparison yet, I'll wait until other companies reduce their rates as advised by Martin, but thank you kindly

The rate you're on at the moment is lower than what the new prices will be, letters are being sent to all price protection customers very shortly.

I realise you are a BG employee; but are you sure of that statement?

My reading of the BG letter I got, with links to the various price protection plans, is that the 2007 and 2010 tariffs are cheaper than the new standard rates, but not either of the 2009 tariffs.

That also concurs with the thread Tripled(another BG employee I believe) started; and he doesn't seem to get much wrong.
