It is a bit cheeky isn't it especially if its done on a regular basis. I buy stuff from Argos on the basis that I can take it back should it prove to be unsuitable (particularly as you can't really look at it before buying) but I certainly wouldn't use it first! I bought a blind the other day but when I got it home it was the wrong colour so it was good that I could take it back (unopened of course)

You can look at goods before you buy them, well you can in the store that i work in . You just go to customer services, ask if you can look at the item first, look at it if suitable purchase, if not then leave, not only is this better for you its better for us, you get what you want and do not have to return for a refund and we dont have to do a refund should you return.

However the poster has returned the wrong dvd player in the wrong box....that also means he has another dvd player that will be returned also in the wrong box....what happens then if an argos employee checks this one. they will think he is committed theft of the original....put a different dvd in a different box. Deserves it I say!

You shouldn't need to have to look at goods to see if you are getting a new product. I bought a phone £139 and when I opened the box before leaving the store to check it had clearly been used and returned. Protective covering had been removed, it was grimey and scatched. If Argos want to refund customers after they have bought and tried the product then they should bear the cost not try to pass them off as new and unused to another customer.

This dvd guy is just weird.

I would have thought that once Argos accept the return, that's it - your liability ends. If they subsequently find that the contents of a box don't match the box, they cannot prove that the switch was not made after the item was returned - you have to presume that the contents were checked upon return by the counter staff.

As for the counter staff, I would say that they should only enforce the store's, and/or store manager's, policy regarding returns, rather than having opinions about who should be able to return what. Although most Argos staff are fine, we did have one at our local branch who seemed to be on a personal mission to be as difficult as possible with customers returning items... even faulty ones.

Personally, I have only ever returned a few items that were faulty - I have never took advantage of the 16 day thing. However, if Argos choose to take these products back, that's their prerogative (and marketing ploy), but if the goods are not saleable when returned, they should either not accept them, or not put them back on the shelf - which appears to be the norm now. We've had a few items recently which were obviously not new - In fact, one item which was obviously a return was also faulty, I'm guessing that's why it was returned...

I wasnt saying that you are asking to view the item to check if it has been used or not, (which you are quite correct argos staff should be checking them,) but MANDIE had stated i qoute "I buy stuff from Argos on the basis that I can take it back should it prove to be unsuitable (particularly as you can't really look at it before buying)"
I was pointing out that you can request to view an item to see if it is what you want before you commit to the purchase then have to return it if it wasnt.
And you are right the DVD guy is weird

when i worked at argos few years back some things got sold to customers which were blatently returned by a customer.

classic one was this toy, which had a message on the packaging written by hand by the previous customer, like 'Dear suchandsuch, merry christmas blah blah blah'. everytime myself or my colleague tried to hand over the good to the 'new' customer at the collection point, they'd quickly realise and ask for another one to be sent out and this lasted for good few weeks!! not sure if one of the 'new' customers eventually fell for it or got sent back to the warehouse.
