Hi
I asked for some advice last week with regards to losing the internet at home, in the end I replaced the router and the internet is back and ok but I have now come across a puzzle.
The main computer is fine and has access to the internet, the router I bought was a Netgear N300, and both my and my other half's laptop connect to the internet as they should.
However, we have two children and neither of theirs will connect.
The first problem computer is an Acer Laptop and just has a notice to say "wireless authentication failed because of a time out" the second is a Netbook MSI U270 and this shows as connected but when I go to internet explorer is fails to load a page, checking the error connection I get "Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (web proxy) is not responding.
I have checked and triple checked the security password for the router are all the same and they are, for all the computers.
As I have torn all my hair out now, can anybody offer and suggestions.
Thanks
Martin

Are both laptops Windows 7? If so just click on the signal bar, go to your connection, right click then left click on Status. Click on Wireless Properties, then security and see if the setting matches the security setting on the router. If you set the router to WPA or higher then you should have AES on the laptops. If not then change it on the drop down box and see what happens.0

You computer is connecting to the router but is the router connected to the internet. Turn the router off briefly and try again.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4

Hi
Thanks for replying.
All the computers are on windows 7.
The router is set to WPA-PSK and WPA Personal on the computers and the encryption type is set to TKIP.
As I say, two laptops and the desktop are fine, the two other laptop/netbooks are set the same.
If I alter the non working to from TKIP to AES I just get a warning to say the computer does not match the requirements of the network.
I want the network secure but was not sure of the easiest and best set up.
So as it stands WPA PSK for the router, WPA Personal TKIP for encryption works on two laptops but not the other two.

Hi
Just looked at the Router Status and attached devices, I can see the two working laptops, and the net-book but it will still not connect to the internet, the other laptop cannot be seen via Attached Devices.
It must be something to do with the security set up ad I can get them to work without a password on the router, but leaving that off is not an option.
Thanks for the suggestions so far.
I can say before the old router went wrong, this set up worked perfectly and the router had a password, just cannot remember how I had it set up.

Seems your new router is either blocking the 2 laptops or the 2 laptops are working on seperate configurations to access the router.
I assume that you know how to access the routers security settings, if so check what WPA settings the router has.
It may be better to actually do a full reset on the router and start again if this doesnt resolve the problem see what the properties are on each of the individual laptops that cannot connect.0 -
Getting there, slowly but surely.
I now have the net-book connected, I found an article about adjusting the LAN settings in Internet Explorer, followed those instructions and lo and behold, the internet is working.
I do have an improvement on the last laptop but not there yet.
It now shows as though it is connected, but I notice it say the name of the network but has unidentified in front of it and Local Connection Only.
The Windows error says the modem or router is not available so I must be missing something.Been there, done that, now I want to do it cheaper!!0 -
Just an update.
I still have not got the final laptop connected but all the others now are.
There must be something wrong with the settings of that laptop as I have a wireless USB stick and as a last resort, put that in to see if it would work and it does, full access to the internet. So that works off the router.
So for now, the stick can be used, but I will have to read up more as to what is wrong with the laptop.
I have read through several suggestions as to what to do with Limited Access (Local) but nothing has worked, it does show the signal from the router as being excellent and with everything else now working, the problem must be with the final laptop.

I had a similar problem to you, multiple devices connected to the router, one laptop showing local access only and the solution to mine was to change the wireless interface type in the router settings to 802.11b/g/n.0
