I must say I still don't totally understand what's wrong with the hard disk.

    albertross says:
if it's not physical, it's not dead, and therefore logical, which can normally be fixed with chkdsk c: /F/R
    crompton says:
i cant load windows up though to do that.
Yeah but has his computer got a CDROM drive? If so, then could you not boot Knoppix GNU/Linux off a CD? If so, then it shouldn't matter if you can't fit his hard disk into your computer.
    :p
  • Have you tried Hiren's boot CD? You can use Ontrack powertools off that to recover data.

  • Is it a sata drive? If so you will possibly need to load the drivers for this for the windows disk to find the drive.

I have found sata ports on my motherboard so it shouldn't be a problem. Someone mentioned booting linux from a cd? what use would this be?.

now that you have been running the software on his drive on your machine who knows what extra damage you might have done.

backup the data, see post #14, wipe the disk, and install windows.

unless your friend has had a virus i would suspect the drive is on its way out.
