Norton Ghost

I have a problem with Norton Ghost which came with Norton System Works 2006 which is driving me mad!!! I decided to use Norton Ghost for the first time the other day, However, every time I try to back up my computer just restarts itself. Has anyone got any ideas please.

  • I may be wrong but I assumed that live update on system works does that

Norton Ghost will make the PC restart as it needs to copy info that isnt beiing used if you are doing a full backup.

Do you mean Windows restarts or Ghost restarts?

If I ask Ghost to make a back up the whole computer does a restart without me touching anything and without warning

Something's wrong, it shouldn't restart. Where are you saving the backups to (click on Options)?

If still unsolved, may I suggest to post the problem in this dedicated Ghost forum.

Yes, but you still have to run it manually (& most probably reboot after installing the updates).

Not with this version of Ghost. It does it while one continues to work in Windows - that's the beauty of some imaging programs nowadays :). G

I do have (just bought) Version 9 and if I make a full backup to DVD it does restart the PC and starts the imaging process.

Thanks for the info GoofyGAT

Does it restart only when backing-up to DVD then? Because when backing up to hard drive it uses the 'hot imaging' method, doesn't it?

But apparently the backups are not necessarily the most secure according to some people at the radified site :o. They prefer the way Ghost 2003 made images by shutting down Windows & booting into DOS. G

I had similar problems with Ghost myself, after getting a new HD, decided to clone my old drive onto it, but whenever I try logging into XP on it, it automatically shuts down. does the same in Safe mode, administrator or user mode. I ended up putting my old drive back in.

  • Im not sure but maybe ghost needs ro restart if you are actually backing up the windows partition you are working in, if a different partition then it may not need to start.

Backup programs can be funny. One may work with your computer while another may not. If doing a backup use both a hard disk and dvd to back up to. I currectly use acronis true image, but have used Ghost in the past.
