Nationwide - has this happened to anyone else?

Options
On Thursday I went to my local nationwide branch to put some cash into my savings account.

It deposited my money into the machine, however it took ages and was making some very funny sounds. After about 3 minutes it spat my card out and said there was an error. It took my £50.

The Customer Services lady got me to fill out a form and said they would reconcile the machine and put the money in manually, that it would be in by the end of the day or the beginning of the next day.

When it wasnt I called the contact centre. The guy I spoke to rang through to the branch and was told that the machine couldnt be reconciled and therefore it would have to be sent to a department at head office and it would take 7-10 days.

It sounds a bit funny to me. Has this happened to anyone else?

The only time I have had a similar problem with a machine was depositing a cheque inside a Nationwide branch. A member of staff immediately opened the machine, fished out the crumpled cheque and I paid it in at the counter. Obviously it is a bit more tricky working out what has gone wrong with cash.

This happened to me at the Livingston branch and it was £70.

I filled in the form and was told I would be credited when the machine had been balanced.

After 2 days it was credited into my account.

The girls in branch were very apologetic and called me when the machine had been balanced.

I must admit I haven't used "FastCASH" since haha...the 3 minute max wait to speak to a human is well worth it.

And that's why I would not trust these machines, far better to wait and get a counter receipt.

Humans are not perfect either, but at least you can argue with them if you notice the mistake before you leave the cashier. Arguing with a machine is normally pretty difficult and can get you arrested.

However, it can be quite fun to watch someone have a full-blown argument with a machine!

Arguing with the cashier could get you arrested too, it could also get your account closed. Far better to be polite about it and say the amount on the receipt does not match what you gave them.

I'd think it was odd if it was any different though. After all at the counter they count the money infront of you and ask how much is there to start with.
  • The other issue with a machine is if I put what I genuinely believe to be £250 into a bank envelope and pay it in at the machine, now presumably the machine gives you a receipt for £250 though the money is not paid in straight away.

Later the money is counted and it is either £20 short or too much. I however, believe the amount was correct. The bank calls me up, and I'm either happy or annoyed depending on what they say. Either way I believed I paid in £250, so if they tell me it was £230. How am I going to feel?

In this situation, had the check been done at the counter it could have easily been identified and corrected at the time.

You can tell I don't like these machine, uh?

The machine inside the Nationwide branch takes in and counts the cash inf ront of you. It spits out any notes that it can't read or are damaged and presents a total for you to confirm.

If I thought I had £500 and it displayed £480 I would simply hit 'cancel' and it would spit out all the money that I put into it.

Additionally if you really want to you could put notes in one-at-a-time.

However I agree with you about the machines outside which use the envelopes and are counted the following day...

When the lady said to me 'would you like to use one of our depositing machines?' a little voice in my head said no, but I found myself saying yes.

What worries me is that with the regular savings the more you save the more interest you earn that month, that £50 would have put me into the next interest bracket for that month, and its still not in the account.

If a bank is reponsible you are entitled not to be left in a worse position than had the failure not ocurred. If you lose out complain firmly but nicely. I would expect the matter to be resolved to your advantage.
