50cm cooker in a 60cm gap - yay or nay

DD has been in her flat for about 6 weeks now, and still hasn't got a cooker. She has been offered an electric cooker (halogen hob, and apparently needs cleaning), but it's 50cm wide, and the gap for the cooker in the kitchen is 60cm wide.

I'm not sure if that's a good idea or not. I'm thinking about food spilling down the side of the cooker and it not being possible to get down to clean it etc.

Or do you think it would be ok?

I've always had built in, or one that's the same width as the gap, so not been an issue for me before.

  • But if a 50cm cooker in a 60cm gap means she can start eating properly?

If by "offered" you men free or very cheap I can't see what she's got to lose.

We had a 50cm in a 60cm gap. There's no reason why you shouldn't be able to pull it out to clean down the sides occasionally and, if someone in the family is handy, the gap could be filled in.

Well, it's a friend of a friend who is moving out of her own home and in with her boyfriend, so is getting rid of a fair bit of stuff.

She has offered her bed and mattress for £20 which is fantastic. It was my friend (who doesn't buy cheap!) who gave her the bed, and because she was given it, doesn't feel able to ask a lot for it, hence the bargain price (the frame alone is currently selling for £350).

I don't know about the cooker though - I've not spoken to the woman yet, so don't know how much she's asking for it.

Yes, I know what you mean. At the moment she's coping with a microwave and a couple of "freestanding" electric rings, so she's eating ok. But for things like toad in the hole, pizza etc, she really needs a proper oven.

We are having to hire a man-and-a-van to collect/deliver the bed anyway, so I guess it makes sense for her to have the cooker as well (depending on price, of course) and just pay the one lot of collection fees.

I have asked my husband if he could fashion some kind of "plug" to fill the gap in, and he's "pondering on it".

Not really sure how much leeway you have fot DIY in a housing association place, but presumably they'd be ok with it.
  • Go for it...........its free after all.
I have had free standing in the past which did not quite fit the gap and had no problems what so ever.

    Don't worry!

I'm sure that if she drops something she's old enough to clean it up, and if she's a messy cook then perhaps a gap will encourage her to be tidier. :rotfl:

If you are still stressing - which I think is unnecessary - why don't you treat her to a long handled brush?
Stone walls do not a prison make, nor iron bars a cage.
  • You could buy a bit of wooden beading to fix on either side of the cooker to stop things being dropped down it. Relatively easy to do and cheap and you could paint it to match work surface.
  • I've got a free standing cooker that is the right size for the gap and I still manage to spill things down the tiny half centimeter gap! (yes I know I'm messy!) You just have to pull the cooker out and clean it fairly regularly.
