Well if it's a local hair dresser I usually give a bit of a tip, especially if they've been very helpful. But when I went to Toni and Guy and spent about £40 or more on a cut I didn't tip, mostly because the hairdresser didn't do exactly what I wanted, and didn't cut enough off, when I told her I needed more! But I probably wouldn't have tipped even if she had cut it how I wanted it as I thought £40 for a cut was a lot.

The tipping "rule" is 10-15% of the cost of whatever you're paying, so someone having a £80 hairdo might feel obliged to tip £8.

Most of us can't afford to be that generous these days can we? I tip about 6%, which I think is quite enough on top of the £45 charge.

I am talking silly amounts sometimes.... I am only there one day a week for salon experience, I am recently qualified and currently doing advanced hairdressing so its really to see how it all happens in a salon.

I have seen tips of £20 and £30 quite regularly and generally around the £5 mark. At Christmas, the girls tell me they can make more in tips than their pay.

I think w211 is right though, they do tend to look after those that go in regular and tip, I have seen customers not charged because it was only a ten minute job, or offer a service at a reduction to regular customers.

If the junior washes my hair, makes coffee/tea I'd tip them, not the hairdresser.

My daughter has recently started as a hairdressing apprentice and her wage isn't great, her tips make a huge difference!

Salons have completely different ways of paying their staff I've discovered. My friend works at the one I go to and she gets minimum wage, plus tips. She had an interview at another salon in town where they pay piece-work so she would get a percentage of whatever she made for the salon so the earning potential is much higher.

Also, it depends who cuts my hair as to whether I tip ie., if the owner does it I wouldn't tip her but I might put my change in the tin for the junior who shampooed me. If a normal stylist does it then I tip her, but I round up to the nearest £10, so if my cut is £27.50 I drop the change from £30 into her tin.

The tipping culture is much different in USA, as their minimum wage is much lower especially for waiting staff ($2-3).

My haircut costs £10 so I always give them whatever change I have on me as a tip, usually ends up being about £14 total.

I rarely tip for three reasons.

Firstly since minimum wages were introduced people earn far far more in real terms for doing most tippable jobs than they did 10 years ago.

Secondly I am often never sure where the tip is going. Its rare I go somewhere and feel treated exceptionally well in this country. Service here is not what it is in other parts of the world.

Thirdly I am mindful that in the USA they are taxed on presumed tips due to the tipping culture. I dont wish that to happen here.

I agree wholeheartedly with previous poster about NHS. Funnily enough I once saw someone try and tip a nurse and she was quite offended and said she couldnt accept it.

Tipping is one step away from bribery.

My haircut costs me £14. I've had the same hairdresser for quite some time and I've never tipped her.

We are quite friendly and she has told me in the past that enjoys working for the salon and that she earns good money there, so why should I tip her?

I know that my Mom always used to tip her hairdresser, I don't know if she does now though.

The salon owner does my hair and I never tip him as he's doing fine financially. I still get good service though. Recently he asked the beautician to give me a free manicure while I was waiting 'because maman is a good customer'. So basically by putting loads of money through his till over the years I've built up loyalty without the tips.

That being said when a junior did my DGD's hair for her prom recently I gave her a generous tip. DGD felt comfortable with her as she's close in age and she did a great job.

A bit OT but does anyone understand the habit in some restaurants of adding a 'compulsory' tip to parties of 8 or more?
