Sliding pocket door systems

I'm looking at getting a sliding pocket door system for our en-suite as space is limited - they save space as the door slides into the wall, but interested to get any feedback about durability and quality.

Looking at Eclisse and Portman systems, but would appreciate any other suggestions - many thanks! :)

  • I'm currently in the same situation, planning on putting some Sliding Pocket Doors between my living and dinning room to replace the existing swinging doors.

I too have come across those two same sites (eg Portman and Eclipse) however there is also another company called "Coburn". At the moment I'm favouring the Portman System, however if you come across any other system please let me know.

Tomorrow I'm going to visit the Portman showroom, so will let you know what I think about the system.

I have often wondered why we, in the UK don't use these very much, they seem very popular in the USA.

I can't see any down side to using them, although maybe they are very expensive here
  • Expensive if you're doing a whole house - about £350 for standard single door if you can fit it yourself - but I thought it was reasonable for one room. It prevents damaging the wall if the door is swung open (I hate door stops) and makes light switch positions more flexible.

I don't understand why new build homes - with their ever shrinking rooms - don't use them...

RustyBin - would be really useful to hear your thoughts on the Portman systems after your showroom visit

Probably because UK homeowners tend to be unusually conservative and reject anything unconventional. My house has a folding door for the smallest bedroom, the first thing my dad said when he saw it was I'd want a proper door.

  • Update after Portmans Showroom Visit - I was very impress with the Portman Pocket Door System, it felt very smooth and secure when pushing the door back and forth. What I like is the door can be completely sealed within the wall, so it appears that no door exist. It feels a high quality item, the gap between the pocket can fit doors up to 44mm thick if you are going for a flush look. I would recommend getting a 40mm Thick Door rather then a 35mm Door.

They provide many different systems Standard Design with Architrave, Flush Bracket, Architrave Free Sets and a few more. I've got a set of French Doors that I want to replace, so will be opting for a Standard Design for Double Doors. You can either buy the Full Kit which gives you the Metal Pocket and frame structure which you just need to Plaster Board over or they can also provide just the Tracks and Hanging parts if you are looking at reducing the cost and get a Carpenter to create the Pocket itself.

Decided to bite the bullet and go for the Double Door Kit, cost will be £571.80 inc delivery and still based on 2010 prices. But if you are after that certain look then unfortunately you need to pay for that expense. As for stock availability they can turn it around very quickly and you can have it the next working day.

If you want anymore information or pricing, happy to help.
  • Hi, we have 3 eclisse doors in our tiny loft. We are in London in what was a 2 up 2 down. Yes they are expensive bits of kit, but in such a small house, it is like buying a few extra feet of floor space.

I don't know about the other brands mentioned, we bought eclisse on recommendation. We have no complaints what so ever, do exactly the job expected. Only thing is on installation it is best you get your doors painted first, it would be difficult to do after as there are some fuzzy black bits around the frame.

Highly recommend them for the right type of space.
  • Thanks for the information. Shame I'm not close to the showroom, as it's always easier to see it in person. Thanks for the recommendations

Thanks for the recommendation, and particularly for the hint re painting - I would definitely have installed it and then realised! :T
  • How do they work at keeping noise out? Anyone know? I wondered about one for the bathroom but noise transfer could be a problem
You never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow
  • A company called Henderson do a rail system you can hang a normal door from so it's much cheaper, totally frameless. We have this on our onsuite good for privacy not perhaps for noise.
