Virgin cable broadband

Absolutely atrocious.

Got a 100 meg connection. They say everything is fine. Download speeds vary between 5meg to 30meg.

the problem you have is that you have one of the fastest connections in the uk ,and the students know this ,if you live near a collage
meaning school gone back ,it will be crap torrent city ,gaming ,news groups ect ,pc's running 24/7 and downloading the hole internet
second ,how do you think you can get full speed when most places cannot get above 10mbs ,try downloading 3/4 files to see if that helps to get your speed up .not a few mb but a few hundred mb and try out off peek time
one last thing a lot off speed test site cannot cope with 50mbs never mind 100mbs
try this its virgins servers http://tenmeg.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/speedtest2.htm

and if your using wifi what your getting a very good speed
there or their, one day i might us the right one ,until then tuff

    Not the hole internet!

There are subscription issues in place - sure, but I am not aware of anyone saying the entire student population is responsible for VM's speed issues.

My TiVO box has a 10mb connection - I do expect to get the speed I pay for - indeed, three speedtest checks on wired give me 49.80mb average. Wifi is understandably less.

So you refer us to a service that can only say if a connection is over 10mb? useful...not. Speedtest is working fine for reporting my 50mb connection.

    no its not.

If you have the Superhub then yes, the wifi is awful - I had one installed last week - 49.80mb on wired, 6-12mb on wireless, dropping frequently.

I switched the superhub to modem only mode and then hooked up my older DLink615 from virgin - I used this as my router when I had 20mb - now with the 615 on my 50mb I get over 30mb wireless...

have you spoken to tech support?

If its a wired connection it should be giving you much higher results - have you tried a different PC?

I think you need to provide a bit more info about whats been tried so far to sort out the issues.

Testing on Virgins servers avoids using their peering links some of which are abysmal.

Obviously this speedtest.net server can handle plenty of bandwidth though so a poor result here will show it is your VM connection that is iffy. This has become increasingly common since VM started selling 100Mbps unlimited on local infrastructure which really can't realistically support it. They are running scared of Infinity and keep advertising headline speeds which they can frequently only deliver at silly o'clock in some areas. Cable performance is very localised - a few streets can be the difference between excellent and abysmal.
