Sorry no photos yet. Had quite a bad night & morning with Ebbe. She howled quite a lot throughout the night after she was put in her doggy den & I went to bed. So I'm shattered this morning.
Then to top it off, all the work I've put in getting her to do her business outside, she's all of a sudden took to peeing in the house. Can't understand it at all. Since 6am I've taken her out for toileting, which she did, then cleaned about 5 wees up in the house.
Not owning a dog before is making it very hard. I know I'm going to have to clean the floors with a special cleaner. Pets At Home sell cleaners. Is there a particular one that is more effective at cleaning and removing odour?0 -
It's still early days yet for her, she's just a baby so don't despair. Just keep taking her out as soon as she wakes up, after she's eaten and make a HUGE fuss of her when she's done it. You'll also soon spot the signs when she wants to go as you become more experienced - don't tell her off though if she misjudges or has an accident, just clean it up and take her straight outside. Use a word when she starts to go (outside) - some people use 'busy', then she will associate the word with going.
As far as the howling goes, she'll grow out of that too. Again, still early days yet. I would try to leave it as late at night before you put her to bed, and avoid the temptation of getting up to her or taking her up to bed with you!
Cleaners - anything that has bio enzymes in will work (washing liquid/powder in an emergency), but I found that Urine Off works well.0 -
I have been making huge fuss of her when she has done her business outside. Also her eating habits are not working well either at the moment. She is on dry food and wouldn't eat it unless she was fed out of the hand. I left her to get really hungry yesterday & decided to give her the dry food mixed with warm water & she ate that.
Tried it again this morning and she had one meal but was due again around 10am. This time she won't eat the food, so tried back to dry food only & still won't eat it.
It's quite hard to not feel that you are doing something wrong. Just feels like we are going back over. I'm now thinking a playpen would be better than her crate. I'm also wanting to introduce training to allow me to go out to the shops & leave her at home.
Do I mix the washing liquid with water? Need to do something until my OH gets home & I can get to the shops.0 -
Ok, you're obviously tired and unhappy with it all. Think about it as having a first baby. Firstly, babies (and puppies) cry. So she will learn that night times are for when everybody sleeps... including her! I have always used a little night-time routine for mine, usually with the words, 'into bed, night-night', and now as adult dogs they know what it means!
As far as the eating goes, dried food is meant to be fed dry, but most dogs don't gobble it up straight away, they pick at it. Just leave it out for her. She'll help herself. I wouldn't add water, because it will 'go off' if you do that.
What happens when you are in during the day - are you with her all the time? You need to do stuff like put her in her crate for 5 minutes while you go to the loo, or pop upstairs. She will soon get used to being on her own for short periods and will realise that you aren't leaving her for good. If you don't do that during the day, it will be a huge shock at night to leave her. How long does it take you to get to the shops? If it's under half an hour then GO! She doesn't need minding all the time. She may fuss and whine but she will soon get the hang of it that you will return.
As far as the playpen goes, don't waste your money if you have a crate, they are no different, just don't have a top.
I would put a bit of water with the liquid - Arial works well if you have it, but don't use bleach as it doesn't stop the smell.0 -
Thank you Caroline. Your words are very comforting.
Since bringing her home in Friday I've been with her all the time, obviously apart from bedtimes & doing things about the house.
One thing I haven't done is lock her into the crate when I'm not about or bedtimes. I have left the door to the crate open. Also food & water are outside of the crate as there isn't room for the bowls as well as her. I got a medium size crate 30" in size as this was the size recommended on websites for Bedlington Terriers.
I don't have children so this is all new even tho' it's a puppy & not a child. The shops are about 10/15 mins drive & my OH has the car, so until he comes in I'm stuck. She is in her crate at the moment, she went in by herself. Going to try the Ariel to clean the floor & hopefully it'll work. Thinking about also getting some training pads & treats incase just praising her isn't quite enough.0 -
You need to lock the crate when you aren't there - that's the idea. When she is older you can leave the door open for her, but right now she needs to stay where you put her. The crate works for housetraining as they normally won't soil their sleeping area!
Look for water bowls that will clip to the side of the crate - far safer. Her food doesn't need to be in there with her, she doesn't need food during the night, or if you've popped out for half an hour or so.
Training pads are a big waste of money in my opinion. Just keep taking her out and she will get the message - don't expect it today, or even tomorrow, but mine were trained within a week, and only one or two accidents afterwards, all of which were my fault as I wasn't watching when they started circling! However, I am a very experienced dog owner, so don't expect it to work so soon. If you teach them to go on the training pads... then you will eventually need to retrain so that they go outside! Far better to start the correct way (and very MS too!)
Soon you'll be able to walk her for gentle walks and also take her to training classes... and then before you know it, you'll have a grown up dog who does as you want her to and you'll be thinking about a second one!!0
