"You didn't want your penny did you?"

I agree with others..it is your penny to do with what you like.
My local co-op has a "take a penny, leave a penny" jar and I add to that when I have the odd penny as I have used it more then once when I have gone over by 1p or 2p.
As for up selling, that drives me up the wall. If I want crisps I will buy them, I am over 30 and able to buy what I want without help and prompting, I can read the offers board and if I couldn't I am able to ask for help.There is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;
So they break the hearts of kith and kin, and roam the world at will.

I think you mean pennies if you are talking about a pile of coins, otherwise it would be pence.

sometimes customers dont want to wait for change but i make them as if my till is up or down and not spot on, i can get into trouble
I can imagine the outcry: "Hey, Bluebeary! This till is 3p up! We have too much money! The day is ruined! You're fired!"
You could just pocket the change yourself if the customer walks off and you're not "allowed" to keep it in the till...
Although it's the customer's penny to do with as they please, it's also their time, so you can't make them wait so you can give them change.0 -
We have a magazine and paper stand/stall in my local bus station.
I haven't purchased anything from them since I wasn't given my 1p change many year ago!
Look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves0 -
This threads brings back a memory from a few years ago.
I remember being on holiday a while back (slightly different scenario though as it was a different country) and the till lady gave us about 4.60euros back from a 20euro note for goods totalling about 7-8euro .
When we said something was told we gave her 10 euros. We insisted she was wrong and without much of an argument gave us the rest. The watched as she did the exact same thing to the next customer, who also noticed it.
Back on topic though, despite it only being a penny, I think it's incredibly rude to assume you don't want your change.0 -

It is not her's to keep.
If you allow this to happen then it would probably get worse over time - next 2p, 5p,,,,,99p when you hand over £5 for something costing £4.01!
Why should it get worse?
It has been going on for years, and they are still not giving you the 1p. If it has gone on that long and hasn't changed, how will it in the future?
There is a difference in 1p and £1 ( namely 99p) You can buy something for £1, not many things for 1p.
I agree that you should be offered the 1p, I normally say put it in the charity box, normally by the side of the till. But I also don't like getting called back for it if I walk away, makes you seem like a scrooge in my opinion. I only take silver coins out with me when off to work, all the copper gets thrown in a tub, which is overflowing now. It just wears your trouser pockets out carrying all the loose change0 -

Wow! That was the bargain of the century! I wouldn't even think to try underpaying by 766 Euros... Are you Derren Brown by any chance?!0 -
we were discussing this today and all agreed we'd stand there till got given change, must admit that when a store said they'd no change i said that's not my problem - i was not rude and spoke to manager and he gave me a 2p. we put all our small xhange in a jar and exceeded £100 last year. The girls put pennies they find in it knowing that this money can be used for machines and carp they like at Haven but once it's gone, it's gone [ not told them yet it is also my drinks fund while away BUT as it's covered our hol there's been no complaints!]Don’t put it down - put it away!

Exactly! The whole point is that pennies saved can quite quickly amount to a fair sum, and it belongs to you!
I remember my boys used to pick up whatever change they found on the ground, especially at secondary school - it was amazing how much they collected! Even now I see teenagers discarding coins onto the ground at school - you can tell they have never been in need.[0
