  • I've never heard anything so ridiculous in my life. Unless a clear, obvious and umissable note was left to alert you to the fact that he was there, then your housemate is an imbecile and the boyfriend no better. Day's wages indeed.

You were lucky that your friend hadn't left her bedroom window wide open, as you obviously couldn't be bothered to do a basic security check before you left for work.

You should pay up just for that idiotic decision alone, as instead of her boyfriend, you could have got home that night to an empty ransacked house.

Your housemate was responsible to ensure her boyfriend could exit the property not you. If she went to work without ensuring he could get out, that is not your fault. You would have been more criticised if you had not locked the house properly, and got burgled!

I would stand your ground on this one, apologise and say it is unfortunate, however you were not asked to take responsibility for ensuring he could exit the property and so you are very sorry but it is not your fault. You might have to move though, as some flatmates would be pretty unreasonable about this and would resent you for it. so you might end up having to move anyway (or asking her to move) as your overall relationship might break down. But if she insists then I would not want her as a flatmate. And btw I would not let her give him a ikey either. She does not sound a reasonable person blaming you for something that is her responsibility.

    Eh? are you SERIOUS?
  • No you shouldn’t. Did you know he was there:

If No – Then you shouldn’t be expected to check her room to see if she has someone over. You simply locked the house as per normal.

If Yes – Then your friend has the responsibility to ensure he leaves when she does as he hasn’t been entrusted with a key and can’t be left on his own as he can’t lock the door himself.

Your house mate sounds like one of life's takers. I definitely don't think you should pay - it certainly won't help her or her boyfriend learn their lesson not to be so dumb. They should look on the funny side, coz it is frickin' hilarious!
If you worry, you die..and if you don't worry, you die... so why worry?! :D

I guess that I can understand why your housemate and her boyfriend are irritated enough to ask for the money, but I agree with most of the others above in that it's their responsibility to make sure either he went out when she did, or you knew he was there.

Before I lived with my partner, I never stayed in his house without him!

Also, he's been paid. His leave allowance covers the day. I don't know why they're sulking about it - it was their fault, and it's funny anyway.
  • This has got to be a joke. If he can't find a way to exit the house and get to work, then he deserves to lose a day's holiday. If he can't find a way to excuse himself to his boss, by asking to work from home or whatever, he must be an idiot. Tell you friend to ditch such a loser of a B/F!
