Hi everyone
Im new to these forums and this is my first post and Im hoping for some help..
I have got home today to find a letter from a company called Mackenzie Hall. The letter states it wants to contact me regarding a personal matter with a reference number. I am presuming it is about something that is over 9 years old as it is adressed in a previous name. Does anyone have any ideas how I could go about finding out what this is actually about. Apart from just ringing them.
Thanks `

They are just "fishing" at the moment.
Usually best not to respond. Particularly do not phone them.
If there is a genuine debt, then eventually they will write with proper details.
When (or if) they do, then you can decide the best course of action.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Do not ring them they are well known, for finding old debts etc.. which may or not existed. Do not contact them in any way, they trying it on, after 9yrs it would statue barred, l would send the letter back, (not at this address) without stamp. please google the name in forum search you will find what people think about them,0

There are a large number of threads on this bunch.
It is not your responsibility to research whether you owe anything. This is a fishing exercise and they're hoping you'll bite. The general consensus at this stage is 'any contact merely encourages them'.
If they have something that is validly your debt they will write with specific details including an original reference number. Post again if that happens.0 -
Yep
Do nothing at this stage but if anything written comes through, do not respond until you have spoken to people here.
This debt may well be statute barred, which means you do not have to pay it.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

Everyone else is correct - do NOT respond to them. MH's interpretation of a 'personal matter' is of no importance to anyone else but them.0 -
Off Topic: Wild guess that Makenzie Hall will not support Scottish independence. They'd lose a fair chunk of their business (roughly 90% based on population).
On Topic - ignore them. You are not obliged to answer to anyone's invitation.0 -
Thank you all for your time to post with what is quite obviously a concensus of do not contact them, which I wont be doing.
Thanks0 -
I've just received a letter from them today, so thanks for posting this. I'm gonna leave them well alone also.
Good luck.0 -
Ah nuts. why didn't I read this before?
I called them (I hate anything relating to debt, etc... - we own a previously repossessed property and continually get letters from debt recovery people for the previous owners).
Anyway, I made the mistake and called htem.. They told me it was for a unpaid Sky bill from December 2007. I got divorced in the November of that year and previous to that, all bills and the house went to my ex-wife. I told MH this and they wouldn't give me any further details other than above (debt is for £60.70). None of this has ever shown up on my credit report (usigin Experian) so why is it an issue?
Any further advice than what is already shown would be appreciated.0 -

So they want you to pay them £60.70 but they won't tell you what the original reference was or explain how that figure was arrived at nor give you any evidence that they have the legal right to collect on that account even assuming that it was yours and that that sum was correct!
You could send a prove-it letter. Or just wait for their next move.
You said that the bills went to your ex. Can you remember whether the Sky account was in your name?0
