  • Nope Stu they didn't. They were the means to an end. The end was money for nothing via fraudulent misrepresentation on a much bigger scale than 1000s - banksters work in billions, didn't you hear ? :(

Nope Stu they didn't. They were the means to an end. The end was money for nothing via fraudulent misrepresentation on a much bigger scale than 1000s - banksters work in billions, didn't you hear ? :(

Hate to disagree but reckless lending (and reckless borrowing by their customers) directly brought down Northern Rock.
  • Do you know anything at all about how the Northern Rock lending business model worked (and it did work for quite some time) before it became stuffed? I didn't hear much said about them which involved the word reckless during that period, did you?
  • Unfortunately due to a lack of lending history on the Husband's side (and the poor history still showing on the OP's side), the OP's husband will not find it easy to get a loan of any money (without potentially looking at a payday loan). I used to use the following example to customers in the branch when they were asking me about credit checks and relationships with the bank:

'If three people came to you asking for a lend of the same amount of your own money for the same scenario and the first person you'd lent to before (as you've known them for a while) and had always paid you back on time, the second person you'd lent to before (and have known for a shorter time frame) but had never paid you back on time (and in fact still owed you money) and the third person you may not have known for very long (or maybe even just met) but who also, you've never lent to before. Who would you lend to?'

Nearly every single customer agreed they'd lend to the first person if it was their own money and not the banks. Unfortunately (from a risk perspective at least), without a history/relationship with an institution you're a risk. A risk they don't have to take on.

I remember - many years ago now - when I was in dire need of sorting out my finances and I asked the bank for a loan to consolidate my mess and they said no. I was raging as all I could see was them refusing to help someone in need. Fast forward many years (and from being on the 'other side of the fence' and I can actually understand why they said no. Because I couldn't be trusted not to get myself into the same mess again (which would most likely have happened to be perfectly honest).

I also remembering trying to help someone in a mess, I empathised as I saw me back then in him and I worked hard to get his OD extended and what did he go and do? Spend it all and then declare himself bankrupt.:mad:

Unfortunately OP, if your husband refuses to start building that relationship with any bank or credit union, then he'll be refused the financial help he needs as he's unknown (lets ignore the other - very real - potential legal issues mentioned by other informed posters).

I wish you the best of luck.

Does seem a bit odd that he wants nothing to do with the banking system, but is hoping that same system will give him a loan. I would suggest that you cannot have it both ways.

I am not too sure what the last two replies mean,a little cryptic!

I cant get a loan because my ex husband left me with masses of debt, they are now almost cleared but it has taken a long time.
He did have a bank account when in the forces yes,but it was wth B&B and when they cosed he simply didnt bother,I do all the finances,al bills so he doesnt need to bother, and he hates the whole bankng ethos.

The money is to pay something urgently, after I became ill and cant work,we fell behind on our house payments, the reason we took the pension to start with.

    Grandma22,

what's the update on this then ?
Without being rude, are you still ill and cannot work...or are you better (I hope so ) and can work again ?

Is your house mortgaged or are you in rented ?
If it is mortgaged, have you spoken to your mortgage company to kindly ask if they could give you a breather for a month or two, to
play catchy uppy.....if you are in rented, are you on the point of being evicted if you don't pay up ? How good a landlord do you have ? Could you come to some sort of financial arrangement ?

Finally...do you have or could you get a credit card ?.....you could then consider a money transfer (think they charge like 4% ?) and they transfer money into your bank/building society account.

You said in your opening post that the money was needed urgently. How urgent is urgent ?

    :)

I'm concerned that the OP might be building up her own problem with HMRC if they ever cast their eyes over her bank account, as she would have a higher income than she pays tax on. She might know her husband has already paid PAYE, but the tax people will just see these sums going in at regular intervals.
