Yeah... that must be it... it couldn't be a sensible suggestion could it?166million wrote: »poss clutch....??? I'm ignoring this as it seems like a hidden cost they are hoping to add on at the time.0 -
Unwise. They have to strip down as far as the clutch anyway. Unless your car has had a clutch in the last year or two I'd change it whilst they're there.166million wrote: »poss clutch....??? I'm ignoring this as it seems like a hidden cost they are hoping to add on at the time.
And if the oil seal has gone the clutch may be contaminated anyway.0 -
They'll have to remove the clutch and flywheel to replace the seal, so definitely get it done.0

1 litre corsa is my bet and a new clutch is sensible0

If the oil has got on the clutch, it will need one
£196 4 hrs at £49 per hour
Without knowing make and model of car and area of the country impossible to say how long to remove gearbox and replace rear main oil seal and what is a reasonable labour rate
Additionaly leaking rear main could be an indication of other problems.
Which area of the country would take the longest;)Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0 -
I would really consider getting them to fit a new clutch kit whilst the box is off. Mostly labour.
Unless its a run it until it dies car, Then just chuck some of that oil stop leak stuff and keep an eye on
the oil level.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Rear Main Oil Seal
196+vat labour
19.60 +vat seal
20+vat oil and filter
poss clutch....??? I'm ignoring this as it seems like a hidden cost they are hoping to add on at the time.
Thanks for your advice so far
You are being paranoid:rotfl:.
Not ALL garages are dishonest. You have been quoted a very fair price :T
It will almost certainly need a new clutch. If it were my car I would ask them to replace it as a precaution."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Sounds fair price too to me......
Why do people think garages try to rip people off all the time. The clutch as said would be a good idea to change.Google gives you answers use it.........0 -

Im with the above, it's a big job to pull the gearbox off and fix an oil seal, might as well get the clutch done to save potential future costs.
I had my clutch changed when I had my gearbox changed, it didn't need it, but I didn't fancy paying the £300 labour charge twice.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”
